An incendiary, emotional, and unforgettable novel of forbidden love, about a young woman driven to succeed in a man's world and the only man strong enough to protect her, perfect for fans of Elsie SIlver, Rina Kent, and Elle Kennedy.

I made it into the special forces course, but there are three problems. And they're all Kade O'Connell.

Problem number one? One of my instructors is the infamous Special Operator Beast—a man everyone fears due to his cold heart and polished career. He loathes being away from his team, which makes graduating nearly impossible for all of us, mainly his least favorite student, me.

Problem number two? My heart skips a beat whenever I look into his cruel eyes, and my blood heats whenever he’s near me. He’s tall, scarred, and a devastatingly irresistible man who never smiles.

Oh, and problem number three? He’s my ex-boyfriend’s dad.

We try to stay out of each other’s way to make our reckless attraction fade, but fate keeps bringing us together. The military calls me The Unbreakable Soldier, but falling for Kade O’Connell might be my undoing.

This was my first read by Lexi Axelson, and Mariposa was highly anticipated for me thanks to some of my favorite tropes:
age gap, forbidden romance, and son’s ex-girlfriend, and let’s not forget the beautiful cover!

I went into this one completely blind after seeing wildly mixed reviews ranging from 1 to 5 stars—and honestly? I do not understand the 1–2 star ratings.

The story started a bit mediocre, but once I passed the first 10%, it really picked up and held my attention. From there on out, the pacing improved significantly and the stakes felt real.

Violet was a standout FMC—strong, resilient, feisty, confident, and incredibly ambitious. She was highly motivated to prove that she was more than capable of becoming an elite special ops operative, and I genuinely admired her determination.

Kade, our MMC, was just as compelling: grumpy, authoritative, respected, and every bit the commanding special ops instructor you’d expect. Their dynamic was charged from early on. Violet’s interest became clear after graduation, and despite Kade’s initial hesitation, the tension and attraction were palpable—until it finally exploded once they gave in.

While the forbidden aspect wasn’t heavily emphasized as expected, the war and mission elements were a strong focus of the story. At times, the book was thrilling, fast-paced, and surprisingly emotional, with moments that hit harder than I expected.

By around 80%, I was completely shocked by the turn of events—so much so that I almost didn’t want to continue. But I’m really glad I did.

The spice was steamy and surprisingly rough, fitting the tone of the characters well. My only real complaint is that the ending felt a bit rushed.

🎧 Narration-wise, both narrators did a fantastic job and truly elevated the experience.
