When editor Susan Ryeland is given the tattered manuscript of Alan Conway's latest novel, she has little idea it will change her life. She's worked with the revered crime writer for years, and his detective, Atticus Pund, is renowned for solving crimes in the sleepy English villages of the 1950s.
As Susan knows only too well, vintage crime sells handsomely. It's just a shame that it means dealing with an author like Alan Conway....
But Conway's latest tale of murder at Pye Hall is not quite what it seems. Yes, there are dead bodies and a host of intriguing suspects, but hidden in the pages of the manuscript there lies another story: a tale written between the very words on the page, telling of real-life jealousy, greed, ruthless ambition and murder.
From Sunday Times best seller Anthony Horowitz comes Magpie Murders, his deliciously dark take on the vintage crime novel, brought bang up to date with a fiendish modern twist.
Read by Samantha Bond and Allan Corduner.

Geschichte
“You shouldn’t be here. It’s too late....” These, heard over the phone, were the last recorded words of successful celebrity-divorce lawyer Richard Pryce, found bludgeoned to death in his bachelor pad with a bottle of wine - a 1982 Chateau Lafite worth £3,000, to be precise. Odd, considering he didn’t drink. Why this bottle? And why those words? And why was a three-digit number painted on the wall by the killer? And, most importantly, which of the man’s many, many enemies did the deed?

The London Silver Vaults—for well over a century, the largest collection of silver for sale in the world. It has more locks than the Bank of England and more cameras than a celebrity punch-up. Not somewhere you can murder someone and vanish without a trace—only that's what happened. The disappearing act, the reports of a blinding flash of light and memory loss amongst the witnesses all make this a case for Detective Constable Peter Grant and the Special Assessment Unit.

Outstanding crime fiction
Magpie Murders and its sequel Moonflower Murders are definitely among the very best crime fiction books I have ever read/listened to.
I nearly stopped listening after a couple of minutes because I did not get it that the citations of favorable reviews were already part of the story and not some intrusive self-celebration of the author. And then time passed and we were stuck in the framework story. But it gradually dawned on me that I would get two crime stories for the price of a single credit. When the Magpie Murders finally began, I already regretted that I would have to wait, probably until somewhere near the end, before I would find out how the framework story was going to unfold.
I admit that this book needs a certain patience. Perhaps it makes it easier to muster that patience when you already know that it will be amply rewarded. If you hate background stories as a rule, don’t buy this book. If you are annoyed by multiple story lines and plot levels, don’t buy this book. But if, like me, you have repeatedly been disappointed by crime fiction that seems too much of a repetition of what you have read before, then this is the book you have been waiting for. You will never guess who did it until the last line of the showdown. You will never have read anything even vaguely similar before, even though the whodunnit within the whodunnit is in the tradition of Agatha Christie.
When I read my first Agatha Christie book, I thought I had come across an edition for children or English-learners. The style and vocabulary seemed so simple. But then people did not read her books for their stylistic merits. Antony Horowitz does a much better job in that regard. If you love the nuances of language, you will much enjoy the various narrative styles of both stories.
What is more, Allan Corduner and Samantha Bond are wizards at reading the different voices of the dialogues and make listening to the audiobook such a pleasure.
I hope Antony Horowitz will write more, many more books of this series. And by now I am very much looking forward to the story in the story in the story. This is Formel 1 in crime fiction.

Will clever sein, ist es aber nicht
Seufz, wieder einmal versucht jemand, Agatha Christie zu kopieren. Handwerklich okay geschrieben.

Loved it!
I absolutely loved the story set in the 50s. I thought I might get annoyed by the 'story in the story", but that wasn't the case. Usually, I prefer male readers, but Samantha Bond did a great job (and so did Alan Corduner). I enjoyed every minute of it! Totally worth buying if you like Agatha Christie :)
