Nothing sets the landscape so clearly as listening to those long, rolling vowels come up from a part of the belly that only a Scot must have.
Cumming does not shy away from the devious depths of feeling that Hartley and Hewson have so carefully layered onto the play. No more off-stage murder, no more simply scary witches chanting, and quite a bit more sympathy for this story's many devils. Every poisonous cup and every stab wound are rendered in living battle colors. The three witches are not just weird, but positively demonic, each with their own dynamic contribution to the making of a king. Lady Macbeth and Banquo in particular have personalities that loom as large as Macbeth's familiar form.
A strikingly modern interpretation that nevertheless faithfully adapts Shakespeare's original, this audiobook will surely please a wide variety of listeners. Gripping Retelling
Bought it for Alan Cummings narration, enjoyed it as much for the engrossing story. Missed chaptermarks, though, so one star less for the production overall

Macbeth, reloaded
Wer Macbeth mag und nicht zu den Puristen gehört, die darauf bestehen, dass die Geschichte nur als klassisches Bühnenstück funktioniert, wird diese Audio-Roman-Fassung lieben.
Macbeth lernen wir hier als Schwert schwingenden Krieger kennen, flankiert von seinem Freund Banquo, ins Unheil geführt von drei Hexen und dem Ehrgeiz, den er mit seiner Frau Skina teilt.
Die Geschichte des ursprünglichen Stücks bleibt erhalten. Dazu kommen handfeste, mittelalterliche Action und ein Hervorheben und eine Erweiterung sowohl der drei 'weird sisters' als auch von Lady Macbeth.
Das führt dazu, dass die Motivation der tragischen Helden, zu tun, was sie tun, verstehbar wird. Anstatt eines raschen Abdriftens in den Wahnsinn erleben wir eine fatale Aneinanderreihung von Fehlinterpretationen und falschen Entscheidungen, die Macbeth und seine Lady in den Untergang führen.
Der schottische Erzähler ist ein Genuss - mit rollendem 'r' und gehauchten Hexentönen gibt er dem berühmten 'Scottish Play' genau die richtige Stimme.
Rundum gelungen. Shakespeare hätte das gefallen.
