    Inhaltsangabe

When it was published in 1955, Lolita immediately became a cause celebre because of the freedom and sophistication with which it handled the unusual erotic predilections of its protagonist. But Vladimir Nabokov's wise, ironic, elegant masterpiece owes its stature as one of the 20th century's novels of record not to the controversy its material aroused but to its author's use of that material to tell a love story that is shocking in its beauty and tenderness.

Awe and exhilaration, along with heartbreak and mordant wit, abound in this account of the aging Humbert Humbert's obsessive, devouring, and doomed passion for the nymphet Dolores Haze. Lolita is also the story of a hypercivilized European colliding with the cheerful barbarism of postwar America. But most of all, it is a meditation on love - as outrage and hallucination, madness and transformation.

    Kritikerstimmen

"Lolita is an authentic work of art which compels our immediate response and serious reflection, a revealing and indispensable comedy of horrors." (San Francisco Chronicle)

"Language is essential to Lolita, and Mr. Irons captures Humbert's voice perfectly. In the Random House audiobook, he read the novel with a sensitivity to the language that conveys all of Nabokov's humor, passion, and lyricism." (The New York Times)

"Jeremy Irons...commands the text with the grand sense of character and palpable eroticism it requires.... The combination of Nabokov’s prose and Irons’s performance carries listeners out of a seat of judgment into Humbert’s pure admiration for and desire to possess that archetypical fire-energy of a young girl. This horrifyingly beautiful story of wild obsession truly comes alive in this audiobook production." (AudioFile)

    English language mastered at length

It is a long book. And you need to be ready to listen to the elegantly put thoughts of a pedophile for hours. But that is the core of its artistic value and what makes this book so courageos and impressive. Wonderful: the very elaborate language which Irons masters geniously, bringing the character(s) to life.

    great and komplex feelings

to keep it as short as possible: i listened this book because of a youtuber called "philosophie tube" and i guess many younger listeners will too. he made a great little assey on it, a video titled "beauty in ugly times". so instead of repeating his views, i advise you to check this video out. i found this book very komplex and intriguing and I am happy that i have read it. jeremy irons is, comme usual, a great actor and he really sells this one. from humberts twisted view and urges, to his artistic core and beauty of mind (how he describes even moundane things as vividly as it where directly in front of you) itvreally comes across that humbert is suffering from his obsession. great story, told like a true one.

Probably the best book ever written

The low tone quality made me enjoy the good speaker and increadible story a little bit less. I most likely will never again encounter such a wonderfully written book

A paedophile is a paedophile even in literature

I had to think of my girl grandchildren viewed and described this way and I was disgusted

    Exquisitely beautiful and disgusting

Let's get matters straight: HH is an abhorent human being attempting to win the reader over to his side. He deserves nothing. Dolores almost never gets to exist in this book, HH's 'Lolita' is most of what we get...

I can't say I could recommend this book, for although it is definitely one of the best-written books I have read, it has left me distraught. I both mourn Dolores and hate myself for falling for HH's beautiful narration. This is one of the great tragedies of literature. There is no love here. There is only lust and hate. Don't let yourself be fooled into believing this is a love story. It is not.

    Faszinierend und perfekt erzählt

Nabokov's psychographic description of a man torn between his love to a young girl and the destructive lust that makes him abuse her told in a perfect mix of poetic melancholy and aggressive excitement by Jeremy Irons. A must have.

A classic you have to read/listen

It is a classic and a great book: beautiful and perverse... complicate relation between both main characters.
