Über diesen Titel

The most famous and controversial novel from one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century tells the story of Humbert Humbert’s obsessive, devouring, and doomed passion for the nymphet Dolores Haze.

“The conjunction of a sense of humor with a sense of horror [results in] satire of a very special kind.”
—The New Yorker

One of The Atlantic’s Great American Novels of the Past 100 Years

Awe and exhilaration—along with heartbreak and mordant wit—abound in Lolita, which tells the story of the aging Humbert Humbert's obsession for the nymphet Dolores Haze. Lolita is also the story of a hypercivilized European colliding with the cheerful barbarism of postwar America.

Most of all, it is a meditation on love—love as outrage and hallucination, madness and transformation.

Kritikerstimmen

One of TIME Magazine's All-Time 100 Novels

"Lolita blazes with a perversity of a most original kind. For Mr. Nabokov has distilled from his shocking material hundred-proof intellectual farce…Lolita seems an assertion of the power of the comic spirit to wrest delight and truth from the most outlandish materials. It is one of the funniest serious novels I have ever read; and the vision of its abominable hero, who never deludes or excuses himself, brings into grotesque relief the cant, the vulgarity, and the hypocritical conventions that pervade the human comedy." —The Atlantic Monthly

"Intensely lyrical and wildly funny." —Time

"The only convincing love story of our century." —Vanity Fair

Nabokov's psychographic description of a man torn between his love to a young girl and the destructive lust that makes him abuse her told in a perfect mix of poetic melancholy and aggressive excitement by Jeremy Irons. A must have.

Faszinierend und perfekt erzählt

It is a classic and a great book: beautiful and perverse... complicate relation between both main characters.

A classic you have to read/listen

What a book! What a performance! Each word is pure art. One of the finest pieces of literature to be ever written.

Fantastic performance by Jeremy Irons

It is a long book. And you need to be ready to listen to the elegantly put thoughts of a pedophile for hours. But that is the core of its artistic value and what makes this book so courageos and impressive. Wonderful: the very elaborate language which Irons masters geniously, bringing the character(s) to life.

English language mastered at length

to keep it as short as possible: i listened this book because of a youtuber called "philosophie tube" and i guess many younger listeners will too. he made a great little assey on it, a video titled "beauty in ugly times". so instead of repeating his views, i advise you to check this video out. i found this book very komplex and intriguing and I am happy that i have read it. jeremy irons is, comme usual, a great actor and he really sells this one. from humberts twisted view and urges, to his artistic core and beauty of mind (how he describes even moundane things as vividly as it where directly in front of you) itvreally comes across that humbert is suffering from his obsession. great story, told like a true one.

great and komplex feelings

Let's get matters straight: HH is an abhorent human being attempting to win the reader over to his side. He deserves nothing. Dolores almost never gets to exist in this book, HH's 'Lolita' is most of what we get...

I can't say I could recommend this book, for although it is definitely one of the best-written books I have read, it has left me distraught. I both mourn Dolores and hate myself for falling for HH's beautiful narration. This is one of the great tragedies of literature. There is no love here. There is only lust and hate. Don't let yourself be fooled into believing this is a love story. It is not.

Exquisitely beautiful and disgusting

The low tone quality made me enjoy the good speaker and increadible story a little bit less. I most likely will never again encounter such a wonderfully written book

Probably the best book ever written

Very good read. Very complicated emotions and thoughts i would say. I would recommend reading it.

What a brilliant narration of a classic novel. Poetic, intimate and forcing you to think about perspectives and sympathy.

Jetemy Irons will Humbert Humbert in your ears rent free!

In my humble opinion, if you truly want to experience Lolita's full extent of poetic complexity, listen to an audiobook and when you do, this audiobook in particular. This novel has been called a "Love letter to the english language" for a very good reason. From the first to the last sentence, Nabokov plays with words and their sounds, painting a beautiful picture of the horrific events of this story, which is of course exactly what good old Humbert Humbert would have intended.
Speaking of which, Mr. Double H is more played than spoken by Jeremy Irons, who has already portrayed him in the 1997 movie as well. I cannot think of any other actor who would be able to bring out the facettes of Humbert Humbert as he does, the arrogance, the narcissism but also the sorrow and regret he experiences in the novel as well while paying tribute to his eloquence and maintaining the rhythm of Nabokov's words.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this masterpiece and will probably listen to it again and again.

Fantastic!
