Martin Chorley - aka the Faceless Man - wanted for multiple counts of murder, fraud and crimes against humanity, has been unmasked and is on the run. Peter Grant, Detective Constable and apprentice wizard, now plays a key role in an unprecedented joint operation to bring Chorley to justice.

But even as the unwieldy might of the Metropolitan Police bears down on its foe, Peter uncovers clues that Chorley, far from being finished, is executing the final stages of a long term plan. A plan that has its roots in London's two thousand bloody years of history, and could literally bring the city to its knees.

To save his beloved city Peter's going to need help from his former best friend and colleague - Lesley May - who brutally betrayed him and everything he thought she believed in. And, far worse, he might even have to come to terms with the malevolent supernatural killer and agent of chaos known as Mr Punch...

Funny and wildly inventive

My favorite of the Rivers of London series! Excellent narration as always and enough story layers to keep me entertained. I highly recommend this series

Compelling, clever, and comedic

I loved the rendition of the main character (and most others) by the narrator. And truly enjoyed the story, though I perhaps enjoy the characters in the story even more than the story itself.

The narrator is the perfect match for the story

The story concludes with happy endings but one lose end remains. A follow up to come? Well narrated and thoroughly enjoyed. At one point the story deviates from the plot and almost starts to ramble aimlessly which is quite unnecessary but once back on track all is forgiven.

Another gripping sequel

A little warning to novices: if you are not familiar with at least four of the books from this series, you will be confused and not really enjoy this book. However if you are already a fan in the know you will love it because a lot of characters and events from the previous books (and the graphic novels too) get mentioned - additional flavour for true fans.

And from Mr. Punch to fae and others from the demi-monde: Peter has to deal with them right in the historic heart of London and it is a real battle. The performance by Kobna Holbrook-Smith is flawless and fitting as always, so listening to this excellent book is pure joy.

This book could almost be a grand finale, but (sigh of relief) do not fear there are developments that need to be continued in further books.

of a all in all brilliant book series. Funny, exciting and full of typical british humor. You need to know what went on before though, ( at least Book 4 to 6 ) otherwise you not going to understand all the hints and clues.

Great finish....
