©2025 Innovative Language Learning, LLC (P)2025 Innovative Language Learning, LLCThe problem is not simply that the course sometimes uses casual Korean and sometimes uses polite Korean. That would be manageable. If one dialogue used casual speech because the speakers are old friends, and another used normal polite speech because the speakers are strangers, I could live with that.
The problem is that the course throws in too many forms too early: casual speech, polite speech, formal speech, honorific forms, and service-style phrases. For an absolute beginner, this makes the material feel overloaded. It is not just a matter of knowing when to use each form. The bigger problem is that all these extra forms make it much harder to learn new words and grammar in the first place.
The most off-putting part is when extra politeness or respect markers are placed inside the verb itself. This is not the same as simply adding a polite ending to a sentence. It changes the shape of the word before a beginner even understands the basic form.
For example, a simpler beginner-friendly phrase would be:
잘 지냈어요?
“How have you been?”
But the course teaches:
잘 지내셨어요?
The extra -시 / -셨어요 is an honorific/respect marker inside the verb. It is not just a slightly nicer ending. For a learner who is still trying to recognize the basic word, this makes the phrase much harder to understand.
That is what made the course frustrating for me. I am not trying to just repeat full sentences like a robot. When I hear a new sentence, I want to understand what I am actually learning: what the new word is, what pattern is being used, what part is reusable, and how I could use it somewhere else. When the course adds too many forms too early, the basic word or rule gets buried.
I often ended up pausing the audio, checking the PDF, and sometimes researching online just to figure out how to use what I had supposedly just learned. An audio lesson should make the new word or pattern easier to see, not turn it into something you have to dig out from under extra grammar.
I would not recommend this as a main course. At best, I would treat it as extra listening practice. A beginner course should help you understand and reuse basic words and patterns yourself. This course too often makes you repeat phrases before you can clearly see what you are actually learning.
Too messy for beginners
