Douglas Lain
In Douglas Lain's, Last Week's Apocalypse, Gore Vidal meets Philip K. Dick, with this collection of stories. These stories present electric messiahs, identity constructs, the Beatles, and even a nuclear Armageddon, which serve as comic foils for Lain's everyman characters. Here is an America where packets of Sea Monkeys arrive in the mail containing secret messages, and the girl next door can breathe underwater. With Last Week's Apocalypse, Douglas Lain arrives with a punch line and a warning.

Douglas Lain’s witty, articulate, postmodern take on today through genre bending tales filled with magical realism and speculative imaginings is fully displayed in this collection of his short fiction. A sardonic edge to his voice, Nicholas Techosky describes the world of electric messiahs, imaginative dressers, identity constructs, baffled aliens, nuclear Armageddon, and Sea Monkeys bearing secret messages, populating what Nebula Award-winning author Irene Gunn, who wrote the introduction, calls "Lane Space". Booklist reviewed the work as taking, "full advantage of sf's surrealist possibilities", and that, "Sf comes no stranger, nor for some, surely, more gratifying, than this."
