About the book

Published in 1862, Lady Audley’s Secret is one of Mary Elizabeth Braddon’s most successful and well-known pieces of work. A founding text of the sensation novel genre, it delivers high drama with mystery, intrigue and plot twists aplenty. As the hunt for the missing man intensifies, the threads of Lady Audley’s story begin to unravel, and our antiheroine must do all she can to prevent her past from catching up with her. Playing on Victorian anxieties about the domestic sphere and social mobility, Lady Audley’s Secret was a scandal for its Victorian audience. What a book!

Ah, I was so delightfully surprised about this book! it was highly entertaining and I truly wonder why I had never heard of it or the author before.

The writing is beautiful, witty, funny and atmospheric. All the characters are interesting, and the ever changing perspectives with occasional introspection gives them a sense of realism. I loved how the author snarkily pokes fun at everyone's flaws while still giving each of them plenty of room to be likeable, even the "baddies" (what's bad anyway, would be Lady Audleys opinion).
But best of all, this is a truly thrilling, quick-moving, plottwisty detective novel! You really can't guess all the stuff that's going to happen, it is a LOT.
In the second half I felt there were a few lengthy passages, but it's overall a much more fast-paced read than other books of this era. If you don't mind a bit of thickly displayed emotion here and there (this is a sensation novel, after all), just go ahead and listen to it now, it's great.

I also have to applaud the narrator, she does a wonderful job, especially capturing the dialogues and modes of speaking of the different characters.

Pleasantly read

A bit long-winded at times, but a good story. The reader's pleasant voice is nice to listen to.
