Die 4 Sterne gelten der Qualität des Hörbuchs - Nicola Barber liest sehr gut und macht sich die Mühe den Charakteren unterschiedliche Stimmlagen zu geben. Das gelingt in den meisten Fällen erstaunlich gut. Der Roman selbst stammt aus viktorianischer Zeit; wer Wilkie Collins mag, wird auch dies mögen. Unterhaltsam - aber es empfiehlt sich das Buch vorher nicht zu lesen, um sich etwas "Spannung" zu erhalten. Die Auflösung ist für den modernen Leser recht absehbar.

The novel itself is fine, it meanders through its intricate plot at a sometimes too deliberate pace. A few careful abridgements could have even been a good thing with this one, especially as there are a few passages about the vice and virtue of women that grate on the modern ear.
Nicola Barber's performance is clear and lively. Pedant that I am, I noticed the mispronunciation of words, 'indefatigable' for one and 'adversary' for the other. How does that gets past an editor? All in all, quite enjoyable, but very much of its time.
