From the instant New York Times bestselling author of Fourth Wing, Rebecca Yarros, comes a sweeping romance about the sustained power of chance encounters.

When Izzy Astor gets on a plane to go home, she isn’t expecting much. It’s the usual holiday travel experience: busy, crowded, stressful.

Then she spots her seatmate, who is anything but ordinary. Nate Phelan sports dark hair, blue eyes, and a deliciously rugged charm that Izzy can’t resist. Their connection is undeniable. Izzy never believed in destiny before, but she does now.

Just ninety seconds after takeoff, their plane goes down in the Missouri River.

Their lives change. They change. Nate goes on to a career in the military while Izzy finds her way into politics. Despite a few chance encounters over the years, the timing never feels right.

Then comes a high-stakes reunion in Afghanistan, where Nate is tasked with protecting Izzy’s life.

He’ll do anything to keep her safe. And everything to win her heart.

Kritikerstimmen

“Yarros explores the horrors of war and the aftermath of traumatic experiences. Her authentic characters feel equally strong and vulnerable, and their will-they-won’t-they hits all the right notes…Readers are sure to be moved.” —Publishers Weekly

“An undeniable connection between two people amidst chaos intertwines to pack a satisfying emotional punch.” —Heidi McLaughlin, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling author

In the Likely Event is propulsive. It grips you from the moment Izzy and Nate lay eyes on each other and never lets you go. I couldn't stop reading, swooning, or letting my jaw drop with every twist and turn the story took. But you're always safe in Rebecca Yarros's hands.” —Ali Rosen, James Beard nominated host of Potluck with Ali

I loved this audio book - such a great romantic story read by amazing speakers.
While normally being confused and annoyed by stories that switch between past and present, it just perfectly fits this book and helped get the situation that Nate and Izzy find themselves in.
Would absolutely recommend.

Wonderful emotional story

From page one, I was rooting for Izzy and Nathaniel “Nate.” They’re both so likeable and relatable, the kind of characters you connect with instantly. But Nate? Swoon. This man was everything. The slow-burn romance between him and Izzy was absolute perfection — tender, emotional, and paced just right.

The alternating timelines between past and present were masterfully done. Normally, I’m not a big fan of back-and-forth narratives, but here? The “past” chapters were actually my favorite. They added so much depth and carried the emotional weight of the story beautifully into the present.

Izzy and Nate’s romance felt real — full of heartwarming moments, longing, and that push-and-pull tension that keeps you hooked. You root for them the entire way through, and when they finally get their HEA, it’s so satisfying. My only frustration (spoiler!) was when Izzy turned him down at his most vulnerable moment — after years of wanting exactly what he was finally ready to give her. That choice cost them almost four years apart… and I was screaming at my audiobook.

Speaking of which — the narration? Flawless. Teddy Hamilton and CJ Bloom brought the characters to life in such a vivid, heartfelt way. This is an easy 5-star read and listen for me.

I usually lean toward spicier romances, but this story was so strong and emotionally rich that the few well-placed, beautiful spicy scenes were more than enough.

✨ Highly, highly recommended.

What it’s about:
Izzy and Nate sit next to each other on a plane that crashes down in the Missouri River. Even though this event bonds them, they end up losing sight of each other. Izzy goes to law school, while Nate joins the military.
3 years later they meet at a bar by chance and choose to stay in contact. They feel drawn to each other, but their timing never is quite right.
Now, almost 10 years after their first encounter, they are reunited in Afghanistan. And Nate is tasked with protecting Izzy’s life.

I feel like Rebecca Yarros can do no wrong for me - I just love her writing style. That, combined with the 1st person dual POV and dual timelines, made me love this book instantly.

It’s fast-paced with some action-packed scenes set in Afghanistan.

We get two very likable characters who feel deeply drawn to each other, but never quite get the chance to become more than a possibility.
I felt myself rooting for these two from the beginning. As someone in a long-distance relationship, this story really hit home. Their feelings and their desperation felt real.

There’s also a twist I didn’t see coming, which made me love the story even more.

I listened to the audiobook and Teddy Hamilton again did an amazing job bringing the story to life.

I can highly recommend both the book and the audiobook.

Teddy Hamilton is always a highlight

This book hast it all... it made me laugh, giggle, swoon, think... it made me eyeroll... and in the end it made me cry... It's a wonderful story, wonderfully unrealistic in some places, but worth a read or listen...

This book hast it all....
