The narrator of this audiobook makes disappointing choices that weaken the storytelling. Many of the robots are given shrill, excessively loud, and monotonous voices, making them unpleasant to listen to. Even worse, nearly every male character who works with robots but isn’t a scientist is given an exaggerated Southern accent, making them sound foolish—despite no indication that Asimov intended this. The narrator seems to assume that any non-scientist must be uneducated and goes out of his way to make otherwise intelligent dialogue sound simplistic or dim-witted through slurred speach and overly rough southern accent. These misguided choices take away from the depth of the stories, turning what should be an engaging and thought-provoking experience into a frustrating one. If the narrator had used more natural voices and avoided these unnecessary caricatures, the audiobook would have been very enjoyable.This way it was such an ordeal, that I did not manage to listen to it and got the book instead.
