If you came to listen to the story due to Studio Ghiblis movie, you are in for a treat. The story is vibrant with life and humor, the characters are hilarious and the plot itself even if similar in certain aspects still will surprise you with its twists. A definite recommendation for lovers of a tale that will keep you laughing and cackling at times.

After watching the movie, I had a lot of unanswered questions, so I went to consult the book. First, the motivations and interactions of many of these characters are remarkably different between the two. The key villains are completely different people as well (given the movie's predisposition to disbelieving in the "absolute evil").

Kristin Atherton's character impersonations really are an ascension of my expectations. I can't recommend her performance enough. Each of the characters has such a unique voice that it's hard to imagine they are all coming from the same person.

Anyway, if you're on the fence with this auiobook, just buy it.

Great book, next-level Amazing Narrator

Not only is this a great story, like basically all by Diana Wynne Jones, the Narrator is just perfect for it.
The way she speaks the different characters is very fitting and atmospheric, highly recommend!

love the story as it is mixed with humour, a mystery and romance, with a strong female character guiding the way and showing how powerful words may be. cute characters and fickle shooting stars.

I don't think I've ever enjoyed an audio book as much as this. Well, aside from the ones from my childhood but that's probably a lot to do with nostalgia.
The story is as fun as everybody always told me and the performance really added so much to this. I don't know if I would've enjoyed this as much had I read the book. Might still buy the books some day but until then I'll gladly keep listening to these audio books :)

This book has everything: Interesting and charmingly infuriating characters, an exciting story and plot-twists, fantastic world-building and the most ✨magic✨ a story could have.
In addition the audiobook narration by Kristin Atherton is just fantastic!

very different than the movie but now both make more sense to me! the book itself is very lovely and light to hear, made me laugh quite a few times since the characters are way more well written than in the movie.

My absolute favourite. If you came from the movie: please stay and listen! It is different, but oh so good! I have read the book twice and listened to this at least twice. It is a really fun story the characters are just as lovely and quirky and such a captivating idea that waits behind the black blob for the door.

Movie, Book, audiobook. All have their place!
