Incredibly well written power dynamics, rich worldbuilding and interesting sociopolitical circumstances that invite critical thought and inspire to revisit personal viewpoints and biases. A 'must read' for sure! Harsh and uncompromising how we know and love this series. Only the last story beat was a bit faster paced than i would have liked. But thats just how i like my Action. So you mileage may vary. I'll recommend to everybody. :)

Amazing book that everybody should read!

I thouroughly enjoyed this, maybe even more than book 1! The ending was insane, and it stabbed my heart :(

Right around the mid of the book I thought the story dragged a bit, but I encourage everyone to get through it because the second half of the book really picks up.

The story is much more thought-inspiring, higher concept (a class rebellion broke out) and mature than book 1... And Zetian finally hangs out with girlies yayyy :))

Es hat eine fesselnde Handlung welche die Geschichte aus dem ersten Band perfekt fortsetzt ohne ein einfache mehr des selben zu sein.
Weiterhin vielschichtige Charaktere und die Sprecherinnen machen einen ausgezeichnete Job

The new characters didn't feel tangible, the writing a lot weaker, especially when it comes to the political views I often felt like reading something from a teenager who'd just read Marx. It's very on the nose with little subtlety or nuance and the same goes for the main "romance". It fails to be a good distopian sci-fi book even close in quality to authors like Octavia E. Butler.
If there's going to be a third book it's unlikely I'll read it.
Even though I enjoyed the first book very much.

Disappointing sequel after a strong first book and a long wait

While the book is very ambitious and explores various sociopolitical concepts and phenomena (gender, class, and intersecting inequalities; social, political and civic rights, socialism, capitalism, governance, hegemony, regime changes, politics etc.) the execution remains lacking. The plot is scattered, the pacing is uneven und the characters feel superficial or incoherent. I enjoyed Iron Widow a lot but Heavenly Tyrant left me deeply disappointed.

The first book was a bit better in my opinion, but this one is still great. Xiran Jay Zhao knows exactly how to make me feel pain and they do not hesitate to use that knowledge god fucking damn

Nothing like Iron Widow - so if you expect romance, you want get it. SciFi elements and fights? Nearly none. Understandable character development? 0. Consistency with book 1? Lacking. Disability representation? Get canceled in chapter 1. Chinese culture and history? Barely.

What you get are political monologues, very questionable depiction of s€x, a first half without any development, side characters without own lives but merely supporting the protagonist to advance (very slowly) the story. Could probably summarize what happened in the book in 5 sentences. So my reco: skip this and hope that book 3 (yep we changed to a trilogy) will be better. Tho with the end this one is giving, I highly doubt it.
