Wie bei First Law, sind auch hier die Charaktere sehr toll ausgearbeitet. Abercrombie lässt auch hier seinem fast schon poetischen Schreibstiel freien Lauf. Tolles Buch. Kann es kaum abwarten, dass 2. Buch zu hören.

An entertaining coming of age story - it does little new (apart from its possible post-apocalyptic setting) but keeps one's attention well enough. The performance of Ben Elliot is mesmerizing and enjoyable to listen to. Overall I can recommend this audiobook to anyone looking for a little sword and frost adventure.

This book is short, fast-paced and full of interesting plot-twists. There are several interesting characters, and they are fleshed out as good as the space allows. Considering the brevity of the book, a lot of great plot happens. The fictitious world is not described in as much detail as in longer fantasy books by Abercrombie or others, but that does not matter for the plot. The prose is beautiful and intense. The book feels less, how shall I put this, dirty or sarcastic than Abercrombie's previous offerings. Probably because it is classified as young adult fiction. And it seems to be set in a different world. But I enjoyed it just as much.

Ich höre die englische Fassung des Hörbuchs und musste das abbrechen. Grauenhaft. Werde jetzt das Buch lesen.

Habe diverse Deutsche und englische Hörbücher durch, verschiedene Autoren, verschiedene Sprecher. Aber mit Ben Elliot komme ich nicht klar: ein solch gekünsteltes Gehabe ist mir bisher nicht untergekommen. Einfach nur unglaubwürdig und ein gestelztes Gehabe, das nur ein müdes Kopfschütteln hervorruft und die Freude am Inhalt komplett verdirbt. Niemand spricht wie er es krampfhaft tut. In der Sprache bzw. dem Ton und Sprachmelodie kommt null Leidenschaft oder auch nur Verständnis mit dem Inhalt zum Ausdruck. Alles wirkt nur technisch schlecht einstudiert und traurig umgesetzt. Der Versuch, den Charakteren ihre eigene Stimme zu geben, führt nur dazu, dass man nicht weiß ob der eine Charakter unerträglicher anzuhören ist als der nächste.

Zum Glück wurden die Law-Bücher von jemand anderem gelesen (und zwar geradezu großartig!) - der sollte auch mal diese hier neu vertonen, aber das wird wohl ein frommer Wunsch bleiben…
