Wie bei First Law, sind auch hier die Charaktere sehr toll ausgearbeitet. Abercrombie lässt auch hier seinem fast schon poetischen Schreibstiel freien Lauf. Tolles Buch. Kann es kaum abwarten, dass 2. Buch zu hören.

An entertaining coming of age story - it does little new (apart from its possible post-apocalyptic setting) but keeps one's attention well enough. The performance of Ben Elliot is mesmerizing and enjoyable to listen to. Overall I can recommend this audiobook to anyone looking for a little sword and frost adventure.

genius storytelling

This book is short, fast-paced and full of interesting plot-twists. There are several interesting characters, and they are fleshed out as good as the space allows. Considering the brevity of the book, a lot of great plot happens. The fictitious world is not described in as much detail as in longer fantasy books by Abercrombie or others, but that does not matter for the plot. The prose is beautiful and intense. The book feels less, how shall I put this, dirty or sarcastic than Abercrombie's previous offerings. Probably because it is classified as young adult fiction. And it seems to be set in a different world. But I enjoyed it just as much.

Thrilling from start to finish

Ich höre die englische Fassung des Hörbuchs und musste das abbrechen. Grauenhaft. Werde jetzt das Buch lesen.

Habe diverse Deutsche und englische Hörbücher durch, verschiedene Autoren, verschiedene Sprecher. Aber mit Ben Elliot komme ich nicht klar: ein solch gekünsteltes Gehabe ist mir bisher nicht untergekommen. Einfach nur unglaubwürdig und ein gestelztes Gehabe, das nur ein müdes Kopfschütteln hervorruft und die Freude am Inhalt komplett verdirbt. Niemand spricht wie er es krampfhaft tut. In der Sprache bzw. dem Ton und Sprachmelodie kommt null Leidenschaft oder auch nur Verständnis mit dem Inhalt zum Ausdruck. Alles wirkt nur technisch schlecht einstudiert und traurig umgesetzt. Der Versuch, den Charakteren ihre eigene Stimme zu geben, führt nur dazu, dass man nicht weiß ob der eine Charakter unerträglicher anzuhören ist als der nächste.

Zum Glück wurden die Law-Bücher von jemand anderem gelesen (und zwar geradezu großartig!) - der sollte auch mal diese hier neu vertonen, aber das wird wohl ein frommer Wunsch bleiben…

Abercrombie wohl wie immer gut, Sprecher unerträglich

I got the audiobook on a whim without doing any research before.

A fairly straightforward fantasy story in a world that is both familiar and with its' own quirks that is very enjoyable, though it takes some time to get going. Yarvi, the "hero", spends the first third of the book bemoaning the fact that he is not worth anything he is given in life. He eventually becomes sympathetic and fun to be around, but that was for me around a third through the book, which is a pretty big ask.

Fortunately once that hurdle is crossed and Yarvi gets some semblance of confidence, the book becomes very enjoyable all the way to the end.

Don't expect to get your mind blown, but it's an overall fun romp that I would recommend despite its' flaws.

Slow burn that pays off

This first book of the shattered sea triology has a rough start. The heroes journey is a classic one, not completly original, maybe morally more ambigious than elswhere in ya fiction. The characters are sometimes well crafted and interesting but often not too deep and archetypical. The following books in the series improve a little in that regard.
The best thing I can say about the audiobook narration is that it is clear articulated but it fails in pacing and character coloration and has a flat delivery.

Very tropie story and weakest part in the trilogy

An seine fulminante Klingen-Romane reicht die Königs-Trilogie nicht ansatzweise heran; die Reihe ist eher für Kinder gedacht - sowohl sprachlich als auch was Tiefgang angeht. Mit Elliots piepsiger, krächzender Stimme ist es leider auch nicht möglich, das Hörbuch zum Entspannen zu hören.
