Über diesen Titel
He’s cold, controlled, and completely off-limits. But the more I try to keep my distance, the more impossible he becomes to ignore.
I need this job.
Not for ambition or pride—but because my father’s medical bills don’t pay themselves, and I stopped believing in safety nets a long time ago.
Becoming assistant to Roman King—billionaire CEO, untouchable powerhouse, and emotionally walled-off—isn’t a dream. It’s survival.
He thinks I’m too young. Too soft. A risk he didn’t sign up for.
But I’ve spent my whole life being responsible, making the careful choice.
And working for Roman? It’s the first time I’ve ever felt reckless.
Because when his gaze lingers, when his control slips, something breaks open in both of us. Something messy. Something addictive. Something that could ruin us if we let it.
And the more I try to stay away from him, the more I wonder if playing it safe was ever really living at all.
Guarded King is a full-length, spicy, slow-burn, billionaire boss/assistant romance with mutual yearning, a dirty-talking hero, and a guaranteed happily ever after! It's the third and final book in the Empty Kingdom billionaire romance series, but can be listened to as a standalone.

He ended up being my favorite MMC of the entire series.

📖 Story
This book felt noticeably different from the first two — in a really good way. The story leaned more into emotional depth and maturity, and it worked perfectly for Roman’s character. It also wrapped up the overall series arc beautifully, especially when it came to the evolving dynamics between the brothers.
That said, I do think the book could have been a bit shorter, as some parts felt slightly stretched.
⸻
👩❤️👨 Character Development
Roman was everything I didn’t know I needed. Yes, he was aloof, guarded, serious, and very business-oriented — but he was obviously also the most mature brother, emotionally intelligent, and refreshingly free of the usual “I don’t do relationships” nonsense.
Once his upbringing and relationship with his father were revealed, his emotional distance made complete sense, and it added a lot of depth to his character.
Chloe was another strong, mature, and likable FMC, very much in line with the other 2 FMCs in this series. There was absolutely nothing annoying about her, and I loved how she breached Roman’s defenses without even trying — just by being herself.
⸻
🔥 Spice
This installment included many of my favorite tropes:
• 15-year age gap
• Slow burn
• Forced proximity
• Boss/assistant
• Forbidden romance
The spice came late, but when it did, it was well executed, intimate, and worth the wait.
The obligatory third-act breakup, which seems to be a staple for this author, felt a bit stretched this time — and in my opinion, somewhat unnecessary.
⸻
✍️ Writing
The writing remained fluent and engaging, with a strong focus on character and relationship development. I especially appreciated how the brotherly relationships progressed and deepened, giving the series a satisfying and emotionally complete ending.
⸻
🎧 Narration
Absolutely A+ narration.
Connor Crais and Vanessa Edwin in duet narration was such a treat. Their performances were seamless, emotionally nuanced, and elevated the entire story. Honestly, what else can you expect from this narrator pairing?
