'If he's getting married, he's no longer interesting.'
Adapted for both the stage and screen, Gigi is Colette's popular 1944 coming-of-age tale that celebrates independence, daring and the importance of finding one's own path in life.
Gigi, the daughter of a struggling theatre singer, is left in the care of her great-aunt and grandmother, both former courtesans. Determined to teach Gigi the family business, they begin a series of lessons involving lace, expensive meals and cigars – all in the art of pleasing men. Gigi, soon bored of their antics and unconvinced of their instruction, rebels. But little does Gigi know, her knowledge of love is only just beginning… At once charming and thoroughly entertaining, Gigi remains one of Colette's most-loved works to this day.
Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette (1873 – 1954), known as 'Colette', was a French author, journalist and actress. Famed for her vivid writing style, her literary works often explored desire, relationships and the natural world through a feminine lens. In 1948, she was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
