I went into this audiobook already excited because I absolutely love Joe Arden and Erin Mallon. Their voices always pull me into a story, and this book was no exception. The romance, the emotions, and the characters made it very easy for me to get invested. I found myself caring deeply about what happened to them and wanting to follow their journey until the end. If I’m being honest I personally wouldn’t have minded if the story had been a little more spice but the romance and emotional connection were still strong enough to keep me hooked.
One thing I especially enjoy in audiobooks is a true duet narration, where both narrators perform their characters’ lines within the same chapter. It makes the dialogue feel more alive and natural. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case here. When it was the male character’s chapter, Joe Arden also voiced the female character’s dialogue, and when it was the female character’s chapter, Erin Mallon narrated both parts. I always find it more immersive when each narrator sticks to their own character throughout the entire book.
Another part that felt a bit confusing was the shift in narration style. In the male character’s chapters, the story sometimes referred to him in the third person, while the female character told her chapters from a first-person perspective. Personally, I would have loved if both characters had shared their thoughts, past, and experiences directly in the first person. That kind of perspective usually makes me feel even closer to the characters.
That said, none of this stopped me from becoming completely emotionally invested in the story and the characters. I cared enough about them that as soon as I finished, I went ahead and bought the second set of books because I need to know what happens next.

Emotionally Hooked Even If I Wanted a True Duet
