What the actual heck?
It’s a great story, don’t get me wrong, but it does have moments that do leave you confused simply because you did not see it coming.
The story is well-written and well performed by the reader from this audio book.
I think Poppy is a great character and I fully understand how she’s not exactly a fan of being the Maiden and all that comes with it. I love how her feisty character develops and how she navigates through the chaos that life throws at her, even though her inner monologues of her thoughts are sometimes a bit repetitive. But it doesn’t slow down the story.
Hawke is a great character. He‘s complex and witty and has his own agenda. He has a bit less of character development, but the more we get to know him, the more interesting he gets. He surprises with his actions and reactions.
Another rather important character is Victor, but I found him to be rather a bit dull. He‘s the cliche honor-bound guard that follows rules. His character gets a little spice by him taken on a father role for Poppy, taking her on nightly forbidden quests and training her. But other than that, there’s not much more.
The duke, the priestess, the lord and the duchess are characters that I fully loathed. They are quite horrible characters. It’s fantastically written and you side with Poppy against these three quite quickly.
There’s also Poppy’s best friend who’s a real sweetheart.
All in all it’s a good book with a lot of action, moments right in the feels and good twists.
