The story is beautiful and the writing is brilliant! Unfortunately, the narrator in English is not a great fit at all, as some details from the original version were smashed by their lack of basic French knowledge. A couple important bits are mispronounced, giving way to confusion, for example François vs Françoise — which made me think the lover was a man and frankly irritated me every time the name came up. Inconsistent pronunciation of names, towns, things, and wrong intonation of common French expressions. Audible should have really chosen a narrator with a bit more understanding of the French language, culture and geography, which was important in this case. So, I would advise anyone with even a bit of knowledge of French to stay away from this English audiobook and read the book instead.

Aber die Vorleserin beherrscht die französische Aussprache nicht. Teilweise haarsträubend schlecht gesprochen. Das Hörvergnügen war dadurch stark vermindert.
