    Inhaltsangabe

The triumphant conclusion to the Tawny Man trilogy, from the author of the best-selling Farseer and Liveship Traders trilogies. The moving end to the tale of the Farseers, in which kingdoms must stand or fall on the beat of a dragon's wings, or a Fool's heart.

A small and sadly untried coterie – the old assassin Chade, the serving-boy Thick, Prince Dutiful, and his reluctant Skillmaster, Fitz – sail towards the distant island of Aslevjal. There they must fulfil the Narcheska’s challenge to her betrothed: to lay the head of the dragon Icefyre, whom legends tell is buried there deep beneath the ice, upon her hearth. Only with the completion of this quest can the marriage proceed, and the resulting alliance signal an end to war between the two kingdoms. It is not a happy ship: tensions between the folk of the Six Duchies and their traditional enemies, the Outislanders, lie just beneath the surface.

Thick is constantly ill, and his random but powerful Skilling has taken on a dark and menacing tone, while Chade’s fascination with the Skill is growing to the point of obsession. Having ensured that his beloved friend the Fool is safely left behind in Buckkeep, Fitz is guilt-stricken; but he is determined to keep his fate at bay, since prophecy foretells the Fool’s death if he ever sets foot on the isle of the black dragon. But as their ship draws in towards Aslevjal a lone figure awaits them…

    Kritikerstimmen

“Hobb is one of the great modern fantasy writers… what makes her novels as addictive as morphine is not just their imaginative brilliance but the way her characters are compromised and manipulated by politics.” ( The Times)
“Robin Hobb writes achingly well” ( SFX)
“Even better than the Assassin books. I didn’t think that was possible” (George R R Martin)

    Good story, bad audio editing

Anyone who has read The Farseer Trilogy and enjoyed it, will most likely enjoy this series as well. If you've not 'read' The Farseer Trilogy, I suggest you start there to get the full background on the characters in this series.

While I greatly enjoyed the story and the development of the Fool and Fitz (as well as the other characters), I find that the actual audio lacks. Nick Taylor is an excellent reader, but even professionals make mistakes... and unfortunately the editing department didn't feel the need to remove them. So it happens quite a few times that sentences will be repeated because the narrator realized that he placed the emphasis on the wrong words. In a perfect world the listener would not notice because the post production team would remove one of the doubled sentences. They did not and unfortunately, for me, it breaks the flow of the reading. I can understand missing one or two occasions when this happens, but unfortunately this books is full of these mishaps or at least enough of them that it become noticeable.

Is it still worth buying? Yes, especially if you've enjoyed the other books. The repetition IS irritating but not enough to not want to finish the story. However, if you do have time to read, a paperback version of the book might be better.

A fantastic final part to the Tawny Man trilogy

This third part takes you on quite an emotional journey. The darkest places of the whole trilogy are ventured into here, as well as the most nail-biting plot points, but there are even a few laugh-out loud moments. Honestly, I did not see those coming. But my favourite theme to take from this book is, perhaps, hope. The characters are among the best written I've encountered in literature as a whole, and the author writes their individual journeys fearlessly.
As for the reader, I think Nick Taylor does his best job so far with this book. The accents aren't overdone, the characters are instantly recognisable and likeable throughout. Wonderful work by both author and reader.

    Intelligent Fantasy at its best

One of the greatest fears with book series is that the author drops the ball as new volumes appear. Not here. In this third part of the trilogy, Robin Hobb keeps the story focussed and gripping. The last parts of the book touched me like few books have. What struck me in particular is how all characters who important in Fitz's life get involved and treated with satisfying depth.I kept on thinking about this book for a long while after reading.
