A predator hunts the skies over Earth. Its intent is peaceful, and its mission is essential, but it is the deadliest machine humanity has ever created.

Piloted by a six-year-old girl, the godlike Skalm guards the Districts of TASC. Her family is long dead. Her adopted father is a synthetic copy of an alien, her nanny an artificial mind connected via subspace to every part of the globe, feeding the young girl information, finding prey to satiate her growing thirst.

But the young girl is an innocent, a victim, one of millions the war has already claimed. Her innocence has been sacrificed by a man with singular purpose: a man who will stop at nothing in order to prepare Earth for the coming conflict.

The armada is approaching, its far-off engines now bright as stars in the night sky. They mean to kill us. They have the power to do so. And as oblivion's maw opens up to engulf us, we brace ourselves for battle.

We will fight to the last. Live or die, we will leave a scar upon our attackers that will last an age, even if we ourselves do not.

I enjoyed the story, particularly in the first book. However, it declined during the second and became simply mediocre in the last, mostly because there wasn't much story being told to begin with.
But the real issue is the writing; while at least passable in the first book, it got downright awful the further in I got, to the point where I actually struggled to keep listening.
The story lost it's focus completely and every time some already very familiar piece of technology was mentioned, the Author felt it necessary to yet again fall into a minutes long recounting of just how awesome said technology was.
The repetitive phrasing made this even more unbearable, and by the end the only reaction it provoked from this reader was a jaded "well, here he goes again..."

There was potential for more interesting side-stories, some of which were only mentioned in a single sentence as an afterthought, others criminally under-explored.

As it stands, the third book is pretty bad and so is the ending.

Throughout all books, R.C. Bray delivers a solid narration that makes it easy to tell characters apart, often with not necessarily authentic, but believable accents. No criticism here.

The bottom line is:
This might make a nice movie trilogy, it's focused on action, lacks any particular depth and you won't have to read the Author trying too hard to elevate a machine being a machine into some sort of poetry, which only serves to highlight the lack of any real story to tell for increasingly larger parts of his books.

Interesting story let down by poor writing

A truly amazing story and gripping till the end.
The narration is also a true masterpiece.

Amazing and gripping

Awesome book, that is impossible to put down and the perfect narrator for this book. I can't wait for the next book in this series.

Great!!!

Narrator excellent as always, unfortunately the story lacks the suspense of the first two books. The time line covered in the book is far greater and therefore the details are lacking.

It was at times a struggle to keep going

Not as good as the first two books, unfortunately

Hoffentlich wird es weitere Trilogien von diesem Autor geben die in diesem Universum spielen.
Der Sprecher zog mich auch noch einmal tiefer in die Geschichte ein.

unfassbar gut!
