A USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestseller.

An uneasy alliance between warring families gets heated in this otherworldly novella from bestselling author Ilona Andrews.

At first glance, the planet Rada seems like a lush paradise. But the ruling families, all boasting genetically enhanced abilities, are in constant competition for power - and none more so than the Adlers and the Baenas. For generations, the powerful families have pushed and pulled each other in a dance for dominance.

Until a catastrophic betrayal from within changes everything.

Now, deadly, disciplined, and solitary leaders Ramona Adler and Matias Baena must put aside their enmity and work together in secret to prevent sinister forces from exploiting universe-altering technology. Expecting to suffer through their uneasy alliance, Ramona and Matias instead discover that they understand each other as no one in their families can - and that their combined skills may eclipse the risks of their forbidden alliance.

As the two warriors risk their lives to save their families, they must decide whether to resist or embrace the passion simmering between them. For now, the dance between their families continues - but just one misstep could spell the end of them both.

Ilona Andrews does it again! I was a little worried when I saw that the entire book would only take 5 hours, but Dates Blades proved that you don't need 25 hours to create a well thought out story with characters we can enjoy. What stood out to me was how well the backstory was developed without cramming in endless narration and how well the story was paced.

Also a novelty, it was my first audiobook where the entire story was narrated by a male voice. Aaron Shedlock was a pleasure to listen to and I appreciated how he approached female voices. I look forward to hearing more from him in the future.

Delightful novella

Gute Story, interessante Welt. In der Kürze der Geschichte ist es wirklich gut gelungen die Welt zum Leben zu erwecken.

Sehr spannendes Si-Fi World Building.

I love the story, the world and the characters. Even at the nth repetition it doesn’t get boring. I also like Aaron Shedlock‘s performance a lot.

My go-to-book

The book is one of the weaker ones of Ilona and Andrew which means it is still of superior quality compared to the rest of the genre - even tho the "genre" is not so easily determined. Is it Fantasy, SciFi, Romance, Action? Well, yes.

The story is fast paced with threedimensional characters and well explained background for them as well as the world we are in. As a part of the kinsmen universe it can be read by everyone, readers who have already read Silver Shark or Silent Blade as well as first timers. So, the book is, as everything by this writing duo, a must read and a definite recommendation.

My problem here is with the narrator. It's not like his voice or reading skills are bad, not at all. But to him women's voices - in every conceivable scenario, even while spitting mad and fighting - are breathy almost moaned whispers, at some points with some side characters so much that they sound like a mockery of an especially feminine gay voice. He also drops into a whisper every few seconds so that he's barely audible and if you - like me - listen to audiobooks while driving, you will miss out on half of the dialog.

Tl;dr: Good book, bad narrator
