Word to the wise: Getting hot and heavy one night with the broody, hot rancher in town is rarely a good idea—Especially when said rancher is your ex-husband.
Conrad Strauss is the owner of Grazing Acres Ranch, home to some of the sharpest bucking bulls around. As Copper Lake's only veterinarian in our small town, I have to see him more than I'd like. It hasn't always been easy, but it's become manageable.
Until, of course, the night my need for him burned too hot to ignore. The night I let my walls down and allowed myself to soak in his comfort and strong arms once more.
If that wasn't bad enough, now his Nana is coming to visit, and she doesn't know we're divorced.
Conrad Strauss is many things, but a beggar he is not. So when he asks—no, pleads with—me to pretend we're still married while she's here, I lose all rational thoughts and tell him yes.
But this means temporarily moving back into the house where we shared so many memories. It means sleeping in our bed again. It means having his eyes on me like they never left. It means pretending I'm in love with him… when I don't think it's pretending at all.
It's just a few weeks, though… How bad could it be?
©2024 Ashley James (P)2024 Podium AudioEvery Promise Broken is without a doubt the most emotional and dramatic book in the Copper Lake series. It doesn’t have the forbidden elements or the playfulness that some of the previous stories had — instead, it’s more mature, introspective, and full of raw emotion. It’s about two men who have already lived, loved, and lost each other — and are now trying to find their way back.
There’s an age gap between Whit and Conrad, but both are grown men (in their 30s and 40s), which adds a layer of depth and realism to their relationship. Their love isn’t about discovery — it’s about endurance.
My heart absolutely ached for Whit. He’s such a complex, deeply layered man — soft-spoken, sensitive, but also quietly strong and feisty when he needs to be. The way he loved Conrad his entire life was just heartbreakingly beautiful. His quirks, shaped by his autism, made him feel so real and unique. They were endearing and added a tenderness to his character that made me adore him even more.
Conrad, on the other hand, is Whit’s complete opposite — big, burly, broody, manly, protective, and a bit possessive. But underneath that rough exterior is a man who loves Whit with his whole heart. Their dynamic, full of love, regret, and quiet yearning, felt so authentic and emotionally charged.
Although I really enjoyed this book, I have to admit it wasn’t my favorite in the series. I missed a bit of the lightness and playfulness that the earlier books had. I also wish the epilogue had been longer — I wanted a more complete wrap-up, especially to see how the other couples from the previous books were doing. The ending felt a little rushed for such an emotional conclusion to the series.
That said, the narration was once again absolutely top-notch. Nick J. Russo has easily become one of my favorite narrators. His performance is always full of feeling, nuance, and heart. I loved how he adapted his voice for Whit — he sounded more mature and grounded, perfectly fitting Whit’s personality, especially compared to his portrayal of younger Grady from Burning the Midnight Oil. Aiden Snow as Conrad was equally brilliant — his deep, growly tone was spot-on, capturing Conrad’s rugged, protective nature perfectly.
Overall, Every Promise Broken was a beautiful, emotional, and bittersweet conclusion to an incredible series. Ashley James truly knows how to write love that feels real — imperfect, messy, and yet endlessly tender.
A heartfelt, mature second-chance romance that closes the Copper Lake series with emotion, depth, and love. Highly recommended. 🤍
heartfelt, mature, top notch narration
