What a beautiful novel. The narrator is superb. A few hours ago, my favourite Reymond novel was 'House of Suns'.

Ganz nette Geschichte, die von ihrem Gimmick lebt, dass der Protagonist, der Schiffsarzt Silas, immer wieder die gleiche Geschichte erlebt, jedoch jedesmal zu anderen Zeitaltern und unter unterschiedlichen Bedingungen.

Jedoch, wenn man von diesem Gimmick absieht, dann bleibt wenig von Substanz übrig. Im Grunde sind 3/4 der Story Füllstoff. Erst im letzten Viertel wird die Handlung vorangetrieben. Man könnte dort einsteigen und hätte nicht viel verpasst.

Was in den ersten 3/4 der Geschichte etabliert wird, ist die Freundschaft die sich jedes Mal aufs Neue zwischen Silas und dem mexikanischen Sicherheitsoffizier entwickelt. Das gibt den Geschehnissen am Ende dann etwas mehr Gewicht. Allerdings ist der Konflikt im letzten Akt zum einen extrem konstruiert, zum anderen trotz der langen Vorbereitung nicht sonderlich wirkungsvoll.

Fazit: Alistair Reynolds kann das besser.

Ein Gimmick ist nicht genug.
