Inhaltsangabe

Would you be prepared to work for free? How would you like to bust your hump for a large corporation 60-plus hours a week without a wage or a single day off for the vague promise of some mysterious perks in the distant future?

You'd refuse point blank, wouldn't you? But what if the job in question was playing a state-of-the-art fantasy MMORPG game? And what if this was the only thing you're really good at? Especially considering that your in-game partner is someone really special to you - and this person already lives a virtual life?

Knowing all this, would you consider the mysterious future bonus worth your while?

So much potential!

[Disclaimer: Spoiler]

First of all, the narrator is really good, I've heard better, but I've also heard much, much worse. He did a decent job on giving the characters unique voices, no accents sadly, his strong side is definitely describing internal conflicts and situations/battles/ect (so a huge part of the story).

But.
Where should I start....

I sat through all four books because the idea of the story was intriguing. The circumstances the protagonist has to deal with, the general world, the ingame world, it sounded so very promising.
What I got was a story that felt like it was written by a child.

No character development for anyone, in the end everyone is just as shallow as in the beginning.

Then the author misses every chance to hook the reader emotionally. Maybe that's because of the hardcore sexism exhibited here that doesn't allow men (including the author) to show feelings? I don't get it, there are so many good opportunities to catch the reader and they are just flat out ignored.

Then there's the repitions. It gave me the feeling the author thinks only stupid people read this, and therefore some random, not even important sentences must be written twice in one paragraph, to really emphasize them, but in the end its just irritating. Maybe that's also a translation error, I don't know, but the experience of quality took a big hit there.

Also there's this lack of continuity, not in the logic of the story but, again, in the characters. They just don't act like a normal living human being would. It feels like the author thought up an interesting storyline and just lets his characters walk through it, without them actually experiencing and reacting to it.

Concerning the virtual reality most of the story takes place in, "boundless realm". The skill- and leveling system is not comprehensible, the character just gets points for every little thing (or not, depends on the authors whim), which makes it feel like the author just wanted him to reach a certain number in certain skills at the end of each book. And eventhough the perspective on the world that the protagonist is being forced into is intriguing, if I imagine being a normal player in boundless realm it just wouldn't be fun. This game concept just wouldn't be a global bestseller like in the books, it's something for masochistic hardcores or people who just want to craft all day, everyday, because there's literally nothing else to do for casuals.

There are these huge turning points in the story, assassination attempts, kidnappings, political intrigues, but nothing of it matters to the protagonist. He just keeps on going to work like nothing happened. And because he didn't care, I didn't care. Another of the many missed chances to spark some emotions.

And in the end, the before mentioned sexism. Possessing women, degrading them, using them, a rape-scene that just wasn't seen as one by the characters in the story (eventhough it clearly was rape, but the author just doesn't seem to care, downplaying it, the raped female in that moment reacted totally calm and without trauma. Yeah, great writing), the women in this book have one aesthetic trait that they're reduced to (the girlfriend of the protagonist is always(!) described as "the red haired beauty", "my red haired beauty did this" "my beautiful red head said that" its so boring), which makes real relationships, that the reader is drawn to, that makes them want more, impossible. They're so superficial it almost hurts.

All in all, the story and the virtual reality this takes place in are entertaining and have so much potential, but what the author made of it leaves me disappointed, dissatisfied and a little bit angry. If you're a fan of LitRPG look up Dakota Krout or someone else, don't spend money on this.

Perfect

A perfectly well crafted storyline combined with a good narrator. All in all the #1 story on my list of over 30 litrpg's i've listened to so far- even made it to one of my fantasy favorites in general. Well done.

Bigear muss man mögen

Sehr unterhaltsam, spannend erzählt. Allerdings sollte man schon ein wenig den Jargon von Abenteuer-Spielen (NPC usw.) kennen... Ich konnte mich kaum losreißen und hab es quasi in einem Zug durchgehört.
