Inhaltsangabe

A dark enchantment blights the land.

Agnieszka loves her village, set deep in a peaceful valley. But the nearby enchanted forest casts a shadow over her home. Many have been lost to the Wood, and none returns unchanged. The villagers depend on an ageless wizard, the Dragon, to protect them from the forest's dark magic. However, his help comes at a terrible price. One young village woman must serve him for 10 years, leaving all she values behind.

Agnieszka fears her dearest friend, Kasia, will be picked at the next choosing, for she's everything Agnieszka is not - beautiful, graceful and brave. Yet when the Dragon comes, it's not Kasia he takes.

"Humans, nature and magic blended into a Fairytale"

Naomi Novik is an acclaimed author and her fantasy novel „Uprooted“ received amongst others the highly prestigious “Nebula Award”. Most of the reviews of “Uprooted” are extremely positive or even exuberant and I can see why, a young and naïve heroine, unaware of her gift in witchcraft, the eternal battle between the forces of good and evil and a story with the touch and feel of a Grimm’s fairy tale. Naomi Novik skillfully blends old myths and legends with conflicts and concerns of our time, the struggle to reconcile human interests with the preservation of nature.

Naomi Novik’s prose is enchanting and pleasant to listen to. It reminded me of the bedtime hours of my childhood, when mother was reading stories to us children. I especially liked the reference to old Polish myths, which give the narrative a very unique and special touch. The way magic is described here, is also quite appealing. It is not just spells and waving of wands, but rather finding the essence of things and magnifying its properties.

The storyline is not overly complex. Agneieszka, a young village girl, is sent to the tower of the dragon, a sinister sorcerer, to serve him for a decade. To her surprise she finds out that she has a gift for magic and together with the dragon she tries to protect the valley from the dark forces hidden in the surrounding woods. It does not really surprise that there is a strong bond growing between both of them, a nice romantic touch.

Unfortunately there are also some parts of the tale, which spoiled some of the fun for me:
1.) The story is unnecessarily violent and cruel. Thousands of soldiers are killed in battle and mostly by dark magic and bloodthirsty monsters. The author lingers too long on these battle scenes and does not move on until the last man died.
2.) Nature, especially the woods, are described as a source of evil and mankind has to fight nature rather than live in harmony with it.
3.) The story is a little bit lengthy at times and the reader gets the impression that it does not go anywhere.
4.) It probably is true for most fairytales, but Naomi Novik’s characters are black or white, villains or saints. This reduces the quality of the otherwise nicely structured characters.

Regardless of all that, it is an unusual and decent fantasy novel.

    "rundum gut"

    "one of my favourite books"

after reading the temeraire books, i was sceptical. but this one is different. a faerie tale with deep sorrow and joy and a sweet reluctant love story.
Katy sobey's reading is brilliant. if you like high fantasy don't miss this one.

"A gripping tale of old and new"

A gripping story that takes a little getting used to but once your passed the first few chapters its a truly wonderful joyride! A well paced book with a fascinating plot mixed from the old fairy tale style and the new. If I had to place it: a mix between Merlin and Rapunzel, with a little added beauty and the beast and a touch of the original stories by the Brothers Grimm horror, that describes this adventures listen.
The female lead with her captivating normalness and the males in his standoffish awkwardness will surely win your hearts.

"If you are still hesitating, don't!"

Uprooted has everything: A strong, believable, likable heroine that develops very naturally over the course of the book, interesting and unique supporting characters and a gripping plot that will keep you reading/ listening until you reach the last pages/ minutes.

I've read books of Naomi Novik before. To be honest I still have two of her works sitting in my bookshelf unread. I have no desire to start those since the series they belong to should have come to an end books ago. The characters have stopped developing and the relationships between the protagonists are already well established - everything has started to feel like a filler episode. But thankfully Uprooted does not suffer from any of those problems.
The whole book (audiobook) is told from the perspective of Agnieszka. She has quickly become one of my most favorite heroines. She is believable in her development from an ordinary village girl to a woman shaping the story. I really liked that she is - despite her age - very unlike the typical YA teenager. She is sensible, practical, trusts her intuition and most importantly knows what does and doesn't want.
The plot is to a large part driven by the relationships between the characters. Very important are the relationship between Agnieszka and Kaisha (her best friend), Agnieszkas feelings for her family and for the valley that is her home. But a grown princes longing for his mother also plays an important part and the inability of other characters to connect to those around them.
I also really liked the ending. Without revealing too much I can say that it's satisfactory. Even better is that it is not an annoying cliffhanger/ the ending to the first book of many but really, really feels like the ending to the whole story. All threads get tied up neatly.
