The eldar are an ancient race whose mode of war blends spirituality with a unique mastery of technology. In times of need, their entire race will rouse to war, led by terrifying, almost mythological figures - the phoenix lords, immortal beings that embody the warrior nature of the eldar.
A swift and deadly fighter, Jain Zar can harness the rage of her scream to slaughter any who dare oppose her. When a burgeoning ork empire starts to pose a threat to the eldar peoples, Jain Zar travels to the craftworld Ulthwé to warn them of the danger. However, she finds her plans to divert disaster are opposed by one of the craftworld's own seers, Eldrad.
With so many futures possible, which path should the eldar walk to avert destruction of their craftworlds and put an end to the greenskin menace?

A decent attempt at capturing Jain Zar
The story of the legendary Phoenix Lords is a daunting one to write. Whilst I won’t delve too much into the story in and of itself to keep it hidden from potential listeners, I will share a few points of critique. Jain Zar, the obvious main focal point of the story does fall very flat in my opinion. The story furthermore fails to entice, the only true exceptions I found within this audiobook were the flashbacks to the origins of the several Phoenix Lords. There were some highlights with very important characters in the 40k universe, and one dialogue in particular has quite literally burned itself into my mind (you will understand it once you get there, it’s a rather cheap pun). All in all, much is saved by the brilliant performance here, whereas the story itself could have used even more impact, more urgency than it already had. For those who are mainly here for Jain Zar, this is by no means a bad book, quite the opposite. We get to learn a lot and gather information on the much neglected Phoenix Lords, thus that comes as a fresh wind, though it is sadly not reaching its full potential, as much as I do love the Eldar.
