Inhaltsangabe

Adrian Tchaikovksy's critically acclaimed stand-alone novel Children of Time is the epic story of humanity's battle for survival on a terraformed planet.

Who will inherit this new Earth?

The last remnants of the human race left a dying Earth, desperate to find a new home among the stars. Following in the footsteps of their ancestors, they discover the greatest treasure of the past age - a world terraformed and prepared for human life.

But all is not right in this new Eden. In the long years since the planet was abandoned, the work of its architects has borne disastrous fruit. The planet is not waiting for them pristine and unoccupied. New masters have turned it from a refuge into mankind's worst nightmare.

Now two civilizations are on a collision course, both testing the boundaries of what they will do to survive. As the fate of humanity hangs in the balance, who are the true heirs of this new Earth?

maybe better when reading

As an audio book sometimes very hard to follow. can't exactly tell if it because of a confusing interwoven storyline. or because of the voice and manner. still happy that I listened till the unexpected ending.

Conceptually very interesting

"Story"
There are a whole range of really interesting concepts and ideas in this this book. This makes the story quite unique and gives you plenty to think about.

"Writing Style"
In many ways this is refreshingly different. No classic story arch, barely any clichée. But the story is spread out over quite a long time and characters, so I couldn't really bond with any of them. About half the chapters are written like lab book entries (not really, but at least really detached and observing).

"Narrator"
I think I would have chosen a male speaker - partly for just personal preference, partly because most main characters (that actually have a spoken language) are male. Anyways, I think Mel Hudson does a quite good job -- the sample provided is quite indicative.

One of the best SciFi I have read in a long time!

On par with the Hyperion Cantus. Amazingly mind-boggling. A whole new world. 1 2 3

Very imaginative story and a fitting narrator

Story:
I really liked the overall story. It's very imaginative and puts the whole topic of preserving the human race as a whole into perspective. The premise feels somewhat construed at first, but it lays the perfect groundwork for a thrilling story and opens up a whole bunch of interesting problems for the protagonists to solve.
There are basically two points of criticism for me:
1. The story feels rushed at several points. At some points within the story line this makes perfect sense and really conveys the (human) protagonist's feeling of being in and out of time, again and again. But sometimes I feel there would have been so much more to tell about this very special experience aboard the Gil. There's a lot left open to the reader's imagination.
2. I feel that humanity as a whole is portrayed very one-dimensional. Humans are mostly characterized as brutal conquerors and eternal warmongers. Even though this may essentially be true in this story, I feel it overly simplifies the human condition and is really not necessary to convey the message of the book.

Narrator:
I feel the narrator was great for several characters and OK for others. Especially her rendition of the extremely arrogant and increasingly mad Doctor Kern is brilliant! In general, having this book read by a Woman was a very good decision, as there are very strong female characters in this story.

Ist ok

Das letzte Drittel könnte etwas mehr Inhalt vertragen, vielleicht wären zwei Bücher möglich gewesen. Der Sprecher hat gute Arbeit geleistet

Great description of the rise of an alien cultute

One of the best SiFI novels since a very long time. The author pitches three cultures against each other. All are quite well described and you get a feel for them. You can identify with each of them with every shift of the perspective.
I found it specially fascinating to follow the rise of the spider culture. It is so convincingly described at every stage, the concepts they develop rooted in their nature.
I would never have thought I would ever identify with a spider!
I like the narrator very much and found the voice and performance fitting the book, making the syory come to life.

Epic journey

It's hard to write about the book without spoiling any of the story.
First, I'd like to say that the speaker is not ideal for the story, even though she did a very good job.
The time scale of the story alone is incredible. It does start hundreds of years in the future, and it continues for thousands of years more. Tchaikovsky doesn't seem to like his own species very much, from what I just read.
I'm struggling to find the right words to describe what I feel about the book, but I recommend reading it yourself. If you're not sure if you should buy the audio book or the one on paper, I'd personally recommend the printed one though.
