Lord Miles Vorkosigan has a problem that all his new power can't solve: unrequited love for the beautiful Vor widow Ekaterin Vorsoisson. Ekaterin is violently allergic to marriage as a result of her first exposure. But, as Miles learned from his late career in galactic covert ops, if a frontal assault won't do, go to subterfuge.
Miles has a cunning plan, which, of course, has to be worked out in between District succession scandals and plans for the emperor's wedding. And if no battle plan survives first contact with the enemy, just imagine what all Miles' friends and relatives can do to his romantic strategy.

This book has it all: sci-fi, sinister political plots and romance.
In the outstanding books about Miles this I a class of it’s own. A comedy, a political and social rollercoaster, a sci-fi opera. Just enjoy!

The funniest of the series
When I read it just after it was published I felt somewhat let down, because it was not so strong a book as "Komarr" or "Memory". Well, that may still be so, but in the meantime I discovered what a brilliant book this is.
It's subject is not only the campaign Miles wages to capture Ekaterine's heart and hand, there is much more: sub-plots and stories about Mark, Ivan, a count's succession struggle, the Imperial wedding ... It's just a great panorama of Barrayar: colorful, full of suspense and romance.
Also this is probably the funniest Vorkossigan book of them all. Some of the scenes are just hilarious! Some are almost too much: the scene when Miles gets his Ekaterin could be from a Frank-Capra-movie.
And the voice and laid-back style of Grover Gardner brings it all alive and makes listening to this great book just pure enjoyment.

I wish Cetagandans made an end of this shambles
The narration keeps getting better. The stories do not. Miles and his family are no longer in any way outsiders, rebellious or even progressive.
Barrayaran politics, 'butter bugs' and brothers Vorkosigan's love lifes do not a good stofy make. Yawn.
At least Mr. Gardner tried to make the most of a hopeless heap of a story. So good for him. But not even his narrative excellence is enough to save this so called story.
Strong, independent women my ass! Being haply to be a countess or a Vice-Roy's consort in stead of an elite scientist is somehow preferable?
Caring about Miles now that he has become virtually untouchable is hard. His love interest to a married 'poor noblewoman' is legitimised by painting the husband as scum. At the same time overlooking the plethora of dubious or downright criminal deeds Miles has done. A hero in deed indeed.
And the percentage of the books that is being spent on describing the Brother's of Clone's depth of feeling here and the amount of they seem to be forgiven just for being Vorkosigan and mistreated as kids. Gimme a break. Both of the brothers should be rotting in jail by now. In stead we have this Harlequin romance with counts and countesses and forbidden love. Again.
At this point I'm past caring. No. Not quite true. I wish the Cetagandans came back and turned the whole planet to glass along with the absolutely irredeemable, Victorian cast of characters.
Space opera? Nooo. Harlequin? A bit. A mess? A lot. Writer out of ideas? Defo.
Eugh.
