Inhaltsangabe
When an old friend of Leonard tells him that his daughter is dating an abusive, no-good drug dealer, Leonard does the only thing a man of his disposition would do: he offers to get her back, and invites Hap along for the fun. Wrapped in the Texas heat, they raid the drug dealer's hideout, rescue the girl, cause general chaos, and then proceed to teach the dealer a lesson by flushing ounces of raw cocaine down the toilet. That was their first mistake.
Turns out the lowly hoods are pawns in a vast crime operation known as the Dixie Mafia, and when the Mafia comes calling for Hap and Leonard an all out car chase gunfight ensues, people die but Hap and Leonard come out on top.
Their second mistake, however, was busting up one of the Dixie Mafia henchmen, who happened to be undercover FBI. Now they find themselves under arrest with only one chance to clear their name. The FBI has a Mafia man who is ready flip, but he will only do it if they can assure safe passage for him and his son. The problem is his son has skipped town with a load of the Mafia's money - some three hundred thousand dollars worth. In exchange for a clean slate, the FBI wants Hap and Leonard to find him and make sure he and the cash are returned safely.
Not even Hap and Leonard can imagine the killers they will come up against this time. Suffice to say, they are big, fast, and deadly, but none of them are as smart or lethal as the legendary Vanilla Ride, who Hap and Leonard are just about to meet.

High Noon with the Dixie-Mafia
OK, I admit it, I am a Hap Collins and Leonard Pine fan and my judgment is biased, but regardless of that, Joe Lansdale is a great story teller, with the unique talent to pack an incredible amount of action, humor and wit and philosophical ranting into a crime novel. Reading Landsdale is a roller coaster ride, taking you from nail biting tension over manic laughter to deep musing over the essence of life.
I read most of Landsdale’s Hap and Leonard books and this is one of the best. The unlikely friends, Hap, the sex graving liberal redneck and the gay, black Vietnam veteran, Leonard, are again head over heels in their next battle against crime. A common friend, the former Chief of police, begs them to rescue his daughter from some low life dope dealers. Since the daughter is not completely innocent, the authorities cannot be asked for help and Hap and Leonard are more than willing to slap these guys around a little bit and bring the daughter back. Of course, as always, there is more to it. Very soon Hap and Leonard find out that they are up against organized crime, the so called Dixie Mafia, the FBI and worst of all, against a vicious killer called the “Vanilla Ride”.
The story is fast paced and full of action, a lot of violence and dead bodies, hilarious banter and wisecracks, but there are also some surprisingly insightful reflections about race, sexuality and religion in the South of the US. Of course, there is also Hap’s sexy girlfriend, who has a chance to prove that she is tough as hell and she will stand by her man. On the other hand, John, Leonard’s gay partner, cannot come to terms with his own homosexuality and gives Leonard a rough time.
As always, the language is the best part, as bad as it can get, but it will make you laugh out loud. Phil Gigante has the right voice for it and he does a great job in narrating the story.
Listen to the book, you will love it.
