Great book

Very nice story. I loved the book from beginning to end and could not put it down. The characters and their relationships were beautifully construed while the mystery was unfolding. Both the author and the interpreter made a very good job. I would recommend this audio book to those who like psychological mystery & family dramas with a few moments of suspense

Nice story, great narrator

What I liked most about this book was not the story itself, it‘s not a story which, in some parts, you have never read/heard before. It’s constantly exciting and well written, that’s for sure, and has some turning points though, you couldn’t have seem coming that easily. But the best about the story was the narrator, the voice just matched perfectly with Joe‘s character and the way he told the story, the dialogues kept me listening for hours. It‘s hard to explain what it is exactly that hooked me, but I can imagine that it might do the same to other listeners. I finished the book in two days...

spannendes Aschenputtelmärchen vom American Dream

ein Buch, dass man kaum weglegen möchte mit einigen Wendungen, die aber am Ende nachvollziehbar zusammengeführt werden. Einige sehr sympathische Hauptfiguren, die das eher unrealistische Happy end versöhnlich stimmen. feel good

Dying war hero gets cleared of murder charges

Allen Eskens delivered an amazing debut novel. The prose is direct and more than adequate, the storyline genuine and there is enough fast paced action to keep you glued to the book. To call it a thriller might not do it justice, but it is a well written and entertaining novel.

Eskens tells us the story of Joe Talbert, a mediocre college student, who has, as an assignment for his English class, to interview a stranger and write his biography. Since he is procrastinating as usual, he visits an old folks home to look for candidates. By luck or coincidence he gets stuck with Carl Iverson, a former Vietnam Vet and rapist and murderer of a young girl. Carl Iverson has terminal cancer, but he agrees to tell his life’s story.

Of course Joe’s life is difficult enough already, he has a younger autistic brother, his mother is an alcoholic, there is never enough money to get him through college, the attractive girl next door, turns down his advances and on top of that, he feels forced to start a quest to unveil the truth about Carl Iverson.

What looks like a simple English assignment, soon turns into a dangerous and life threatening adventure. Luckily the girl next door, Lila, is thrilled by all that and becomes a true and resourceful companion.

Good entertainment, it is not Pulitzer Price stuff, but fun to read.

I have read the complete series and each book is a masterpiece by its own. I love how the story develops with so many characters. Fantastic reading

A real feelgood story with some action in between.

Enjoyable if somewhat predictable story about a college student who does an assignment on a dying convicted murderer only to want to prove his innocence before he dies, and receive redemption in the process.
