Beschreibung von Audible

Why we think it's Essential - Every now and then a book comes along that speaks to your soul. Angie Thomas' debut novel, The Hate U Give, is one such book. Each editor here has listened, and the feeling afterwards is unanimous - this is one of the best performances we've ever encountered. Thomas' message is both timely and transcendent. Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, this book is important, necessary, fearless, and, quite simply, stunning.

Narrator Bahni Turpin manages to give voice to such a broad and rich cast of characters, each with their own authentic perspective, demonstrating the power of performance to bring new depth to a complex social issue.

We believe this is truly the definition of required listening.

Inhaltsangabe

Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, Angie Thomas' searing debut about an ordinary girl in extraordinary circumstances addresses issues of racism and police violence with intelligence, heart, and unflinching honesty. Soon to be a major motion picture from Fox 2000/Temple Hill Productions.

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend, Khalil, at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil's name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: What really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does - or does not - say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

Kritikerstimmen

"[Narrator Bahni] Turpin's portrayals of all the characters are rich and deep, environments are evocatively described, and Starr's fraught struggles to understand life's complexities are believable." (AudioFile)

"Five star for gripping, interesting, topical must-read"

I highly enjoyed the book by Angie Thomas. She achieves to give an interesting and gripping account of the currently still very important topic of racism and racial I justice.

The story is a perfect combination of suspense, humor, and political message as main character Starr Carter tries to deal with the horrible event when a police officer shot her childhood friend Khalil in her presence.

The characters are all very well portrayed and as a white person one comes to understand better how frustrating the current and past police shootings of black, unarmed victims must be, including the often applied tactic of making the true victim look bad by finding a criminal record or even only allegations in hindsight.

The story is well rounded as also other aspects of poor neighborhoods such as patchwork families, schooling, gangs, are part of what the Carter family lives through.

Congrats to the narrator Bahni Turpin who does an awesome job!
