Great storytelling
Even as a non-native speaker this audio book was great. I thought it would be on the more difficult side but it was a breeze to listen to. The speaker is great as well. Very interesting story about the opium wars. Recommended!

Extremely interesting and excellently delivered
I came into this knowing next to nothing on the subject. For me this book has brought the world of early 19th Century China to life. The way the author switches the narrative from British to Chinese imperial perspective is very informative and refreshing.
Although naively, I feel like understand some of China's current political and economic initiatives better through this history. Trying to take 18th Century Britain's role through its expanding trade networks.
Sometimes American involvement is discussed even when not overly important but it doesn't detriment. Although, bringing in other actors such as France, Japan or the Catholic Portuguese and their missionaries would have been interesting.
I wish he would have discussed the Imperial reaction and understanding of the war and its consequences in more depth rather than just focus on the local officials in this section. I also wish the book were longer so it could have provided an epilogue introducing the second opium war.
