Alan Cumming grew up in the grip of a man who held his family hostage, someone who meted out violence with a frightening ease, who waged a silent war with himself that sometimes spilled over onto everyone around him. That man was Alan's father, Alex Cumming.
Alex was the dark, enigmatic heart of Cumming family life. But he was not the only mystery. Alan's maternal grandfather, Tommy Darling, had disappeared to the Far East after the Second World War. The last time Alan's mother saw her father she was eight years old. When she was 13, the family was informed that he had died in an accidental shooting.
Curious to explore this second mystery, Alan committed to filming an episode of the BBC's Who Do You Think You Are? Then out of the blue, his father, who Alan and his brother had not seen or spoken to for more than a decade, called. Ergreifend, mutig, großartig.
Ich würde gerne mehr Sterne geben, so ergriffen bin ich von dieser Autobiografie.

Moving Story

Wonderful
First of all I absolutely love that Alan Cumming read this himself. His passion, fear and love throughout the book is made all the more palpable.
The story itself is gripping. It will take you on a roller coaster of emotions and you'll find yourself hoping and praying that this will happen ...or this. I've always liked Alan Cumming and the book has developed that and also made me respect him. It cannot be easy to have told this story. I'm so glad that he is happy now and loved.

Unglaublich und bewegend
Ich hatte nicht erwartet, wie sehr mich Alan Cummings Geschichte in den Bann ziehen würde. Er ist ein ausgezeichneter Sprecher mit viel Humor und noch mehr Gefühl in der Stimme. Seine Geschichte ist aufgebaut wie ein Krimi, es bleibt bis zum Schluss spannend und ich musste mich mehrmals daran erinnern, dass dieser Mann das alles erlebt hat. Eine wunderschöne und inspirierende Geschichte die mir zeigt, wie stark Alan Cumming ist, um dennoch der positive Mensch zu sein der er ist.

Mirrored my own childhood
The first few chapters were almost as if they had been written about my childhood, even down to the fact that my father worked at a sawmill. Thank you for writing this so honestly. Pippa

A book that’s more important to write that to read
It is really a story that’s important to him and his family alone. He doubtless needed to write it, but the cathartic effect doesn’t quite work for the reader or listener. I must admit I’m probably the last person on the planet who had never heard of Alan Cumming beforehand and not seen any play or film with him. The book was recommended to me because I am always looking for good stories read by great voices and there are few and far between and a friend thought I might find both in this book. I wasn’t disappointed in the voice, he certainly reads very well. But the story really doesn’t need six-and-a-half hours to tell, it drags on a bit. I found myself wanting to fast forward more than once. His father was a monster, alright, but as it is with monsters … you don’t really get closure with why they are monsters and doing monstrous things. It must be very frustrating for the author, he has my sympathies, but is even more so for us.
