Gene Kranz was present at the creation of America's manned space program and was a key player in it for three decades. As a flight director in NASA's Mission Control, Kranz witnessed firsthand the making of history. He participated in the space program from the early days of the Mercury program to the last Apollo mission, and beyond. He endured the disastrous first years when rockets blew up and the United States seemed to fall further behind the Soviet Union in the space race. He helped to launch Alan Shepard and John Glenn, then assumed the flight director's role in the Gemini program, which he guided to fruition. With his teammates, he accepted the challenge to carry out President John F. Kennedy's commitment to land a man on the moon before the end of the 1960s.
Kranz was flight director for both Apollo 11, the mission in which Neil Armstrong fulfilled President Kennedy's pledge, and Apollo 13. He headed the Tiger Team that had to figure out how to bring the three Apollo 13 astronauts safely back to Earth. (In the film Apollo 13, Kranz was played by the actor Ed Harris, who earned an Academy Award nomination for his performance.)
In Failure Is Not an Option, Gene Kranz recounts these thrilling historic events and offers new information about the famous flights. What appeared as nearly flawless missions to the moon were, in fact, a series of hair-raising near misses. When the space technology failed, as it sometimes did, the controllers' only recourse was to rely on their skills and those of their teammates. Kranz takes us inside Mission Control and introduces us to some of the whiz kids - still in their twenties, only a few years out of college - who had to figure it all out as they went along, creating a great and daring enterprise. He reveals behind-the-scenes details to demonstrate the leadership, discipline, trust, and teamwork that made the space program a success.

Great book for everybody interested in Spaceflight
There are not many good books about the earliest steps of humankind to conquer space, but this one sure is great. It has the perfect mixture between personal information, a bit biography, not too much technological detail and very exciting descritpions about the problems, almost-catastrophies, calamities and wonders of the program, that brought the first man on the moon. A little detail that adds to the fascination is, that the reader of the book, Danny Campbell, exactly sounds as you would expect Gene Kranz, the author, to sound like.

sehr interessant
sehr interessantes Buch. Es ist einfach faszinierend zu hören wie NASA entstanden ist und wie die Menschheit zum Mond geflogen sind.

aufschlussreich aber zu viel Pathos
Viele interessante und spannende Aspekte der Bodenarbeit werden angesprochen. Physikalische Details bleiben im Rahmen (ich hätte mich über mehr gefreut, aber das ist Ansichtssache).
Das ganze ist spannend und wird entsprechend spannend gelesen.
Für meinen Geschmack wird aber viel zu viel Heldentum beschworen.
Daher nur 4 von 5 Sternen.

Interessante Einblicke
Ich verbesserte mit diesem hoch interessanten Buch und der Geschichte dieses verdienten Mannes gerne meine Sprachkenntnisse. Wer sich für Raumfahrt und die Geschichte der NASA Anfang der 50iger bis Ende Apollo interessiert, kann bedenkenlos zugreifen! Es begleitete mich jeden Tag auf dem Weg zur Arbeit.

Excellent and moving book
Excellent, informative and moving book about the impact of mission control during the infancy of space exploration and the US moon missions. Gene Kranzes book is absolutely inspiring!

Excellent inside view of the early mission control operations
This is a really good story of how mission control was crucial on getting a man on the moon and back.
Favorite parts are the Apollo 11 landing and rescue operations to get the astronauts safely back home in the crippled Apollo 13 spacecraft.

Great book about an even greater story.
Gene Kranz tells the story of how Menkind flew to the moon from his personal and highly emotional point of view. Great to listen and highly interesting to learn how this great achievement was made possible.
