A masters masterwork
Prof. Greenberg is without doubt the most prolific author of the Great Courses series (you only have to count). And he is one of the best too! But "Great Music of the 2oth Century" exceeds even the high standards of his other courses. This is a truly great course, not only informative but also inspiring and so to say opening your mind to the wonders of (nearly) contemporary non pop or rock music. It is a bit different organized than his other courses as the music examples are NOT integrated in the audio but accessible via URLs mostly to YouTube (You will learn to hate commercials!). So this audio book chains you to your lap- or desktop. If you listen to all links in full length you will have to spent MUCH more time than the 17h 50min runtime. I especially enjoyed the last quarter of the audiobook. Of most of the presented composers I had never heard before. And - no surprise here - some I liked more, some I liked less. Still it was a great experience! The course ends with a lecture of Robert Greenberg own career as composer and his musical development. First final remark: In his lesson about Terry Riley and his famous composition "In C" Prof. Greenberg suggests looking for alternative versions of the piece. Thank you professor Greenberg, you have been able to push us through this century, breathtaking and enriched.
As Beethoven said, music is more than any philosophy can dream of.
With these lessons brought to us by Prof Greenberg, we begin to experience this true statement of our beloved "jerk" Beethoven.
We all have to be grateful for your work.
Music is the essence of our cultural life.

Keine Musikbeispiele
Angekündigt werden viele musikalische Beispiele zur Illustration. Diese sind im Hörbuch aber nicht zu hören, es ist nur der Text vorhanden. Das macht es öde und langatmig und kaum nachvollziehbar. Eine Enttäuschung.
