Über diesen Titel

Playing music should be as simple and natural as drawing a breath, yet most musicians are hindered by self-consciousness, apprehension, self-doubt, and stress. Before we can truly express our inner self, we must first learn to be at peace and overcome the distractions that can make performance difficult. Kenny's remarkable work deals directly with these hindrances, and presents ways to let our natural creative powers flow freely with minimal stress and effort.

Includes inspiring recordings of meditations designed to initiate positive thought. This book has become a favorite of many musicians who credit it with changing their lives!

"Effortless Mastery is a book that the world really needs. It was not written by a philosopher or an academic. Kenny Werner, is one of my favorite pianists I've ever had the pleasure of working with, and in my opinion one of the best pianists living on the planet. Kenny teaches that 'The joy of practicing is concentration. The joy of playing is liberation.' Effortless Mastery teaches the seeker how to achieve both at the highest levels. It also shows how to practice effectively, promoting real growth and how to play and perform free from fear and self-judgment. I highly recommend this book." (Quincy Jones)

Kenny Werner recounts his musical biography from his first encounter with his instrument to his life as a professional musician while describing many inner and outer struggles he and many other musicians face in their career. From the hardships of being a dysfunctional learner as a kid who found it hard to practice while being easily distracted by things like television (easy to compare with nowadays social media addictions) up to his way through the intense pressure of being sufficient as a professional musician in adulthood. He finally finds himself liberated by the practice of what one could summarize as mindfulness meditation - from this point he revisits his education and mindset up to this point in amusing and relatable anectodes while linking his findings to the unique features of iconic (especially jazz) musicians. Special about this book is, that he does give an applicable and simple step by step guide of how to be mindful while playing one's own respective instrument. This might be a huge help for musicians facing a block or feeling stuck in their journey in one way or another. It gets a bit esoteric at times and requires some openness towards the meditative practice, but is overall easy to understand and written in an amusing joyful manner. The narrator of the audiobook did a great job making the entire text feel casual and approachable with a calm and cordial way of speaking that also perfectly fits the guided meditations. I would recommend this book for all musicians trying to improve their relationship to their instrument and music who do not seek a mere technical, theoretical or scientific approach but a different perspective or a shift in their mindset to renew their joy in their craft.
