Have you ever felt like there was something inside of you pushing your actions? A dormant beast, so to speak. I know it sounds crazy.

But, that’s the best way I could describe how I’ve felt for a long time. I thought it was normal, some animal part of the human brain that lingered from evolution. But, this is the story of how I learned I wasn’t exactly human, and there was a world underneath our own where all the things that go bump in the night live. And, that my beast was very real indeed.

Of course, my first steps into this new unknown world are full of problems. I didn’t know the rules, landing me on the wrong side of a werewolf pack and in a duel to the death with a smug elf.

But, at least, I have a few new friends in the form of a dark elf vampiress and a kitsune assassin as I try to figure out just what I am, and more importantly, learn to control it.

I really liked this series. The chatacters were interesting and the narration was very good. So far a great entry into the series.

Die Geschichte ist vernünftig, sogar der Versuch von etwas Romantik ist drin, aber das größte Lob geht an die Sprecher. Die machen hier einen super Job.

All in all a fantastik audiobook.

Characters are extremly annoying, nearly all of them jump from one emotional state to the next, this makes character interactions very awkward and stilted. The protagonist is the worst offender since he switches from frightened little mouse to dominant brutal monster and back at the drop of a hat.

World building is horrible, this "secret" society of supernatural beings has absolutely no chance of staying hidden in the modern world the way they act in this story. This makes the whole story very hard to stomach.

The story is just a bad rehash of better stories in the genre, for example "The Valens Legacy" of Jan Stryvant. It works as a story template but the author makes no good changes to it to make it distinguishable from the template.

First: the voice acting is wonderful.

But the MC is an idiot, though not in the usual way. MCs being suddenly supremely stupid because the plot does not work otherwise is a pet peeve of mine and a common hack for bad authors, BUT THAT'S NOT HAPPENING HERE.

The MC is, completely unrelated to the plot, an idiot throughout. Asking questions with extremely obvious answers, missing the point, being surprised by stuff you could see coming for a mile... I'm not familiar with American college education, but he should have barely graduated high school.

The story, meanwhile, is nice, and not dependent on the idiocy displayed. This very annoying, and I've no idea why he was written like his skull is a vacuum tube. Was the author worried his readers were idiots and needed some handholding to follow the plot? No idea. It's a shame.

This one is... puzzling.
