His compelling story, which has its beginnings at the turn of the century, circles around “the raw truth” of Anna’s own life, the one she’s left behind but can never truly leave. And as the narrative moves back and forth in time and place, we discover each of the characters managing to find some foothold in a present rough hewn from the past.

Manchmal kann es ein Fluch sein, ein guter Autor zu sein. Man wird an seinen früheren Büchern gemessen, und jede Neuerscheinung unter dem Gesichtspunkt gelesen, ob der Autor das Niveau noch einmal erreicht. Doch selbst ohne diese Vorgabe ist Divisadero eher dürftig. Wer Der Englische Patient oder Anil's Geist schätzen gelernt hat, wird von Ondaatjes neuem Roman enttäuscht sein. Zwar spielt sich auch in ihm eine komplexe Geschichte auf verschiedenen Zeitebenen ab, doch fehlt die große zeitgeschichtliche Klammer, die Ondaatjes Romane ausmacht. Dort wirken seine Protagonisten wie von der Zeit durchgerüttelt, in der sie leben, und ihre Schicksale spiegeln sich an der Unausweichlichkeit der Ereignisse, die von außen in ihr Leben drängen. Anders die Dreiecksgeschichte in Divisadero. Sie bricht in ein Davor und Danach auseinander, wird mutwillig gekappt. Kaum ist sie in Schwung gekommen und schon verlieren sich Claire, Anna und Cooper wieder, um reichlich konstruiert noch einmal zusammen zu finden. Natürlich vermag Ondaatje auch in diesem Roman betörend schöne Erzählpassagen zu schreiben, doch zerfasert seine Geschichte. An dem von Anna nacherzähltem Lebenslauf des Schriftstellers Lucien Seguras ist man angesichts der Tatsache nicht wirklich interessiert, daß man gerne mehr über die anderen Drei erfahren hätte. Zumal Seguras Geschichte vor dem Hintergrund des Krieges gelegentlich ins Klischee abdriftet. So bleiben wir als Leser erwartungsfroh, diesmal verdrossen zurück und hoffen auf den nächsten Roman.
