The character of Wiliam Munk appaers in this book much more unfriendlyer and harsher as in predecessing books. The shifting of the main subjekt to the figur of the lawyer was very agreeable with me. There was a hint of a beginning lovestory between Hesther and Oliver and an surprising turn to Monk again.
The story itself was fascinating and didn't lost it's dramatic importance to this day.
The speaker sometimes shows own emotion that is carried in her voice. That is not annoying but reminds me of the speaker itself as a reading person.

A slow build-up to an unexpected and exciting ending. Very good character observations. Interesting interweaving of main and subplot. Historically accurate details. Very enjoyable and thoughtful story.

One wonders where this goes when you realise that the final trial begins and there are more than five hours left. The answer is a surprising and marvellous court story that reminds me of twelve angry men. I don’t often get goosebumps but the content of this book in context of the historical setting makes you shudder and sympathise with the women of those times.

Ich war in der Mitte versucht, abzubrechen. Die langatmigen Beschreibungen der miserablen rechtlichen Lage von Frauen in der viktorianischen Zeit nerven. Zum Ende wird es aber zum Glück dann wieder spannend.
