Popular blogger Cal Newport reveals the new key to achieving success and true meaning in professional life: the ability to master distraction.
Many modern knowledge workers now spend most of their brain power battling distraction and interruption, whether because of the incessant pinging of devices, noisy open-plan offices or the difficulty of deciding what deserves their attention the most. When Cal Newport coined the term deep work on his popular blog, Study Hacks, in 2012, he found the concept quickly hit a nerve. Most of us, after all, are excruciatingly familiar with shallow work instead - distractedly skimming the surface of our workload and never getting to the important part. Newport began exploring the methods and mind-set that foster a practice of distraction-free productivity at work, and now, in Deep Work, he shows how anyone can achieve this elusive state.
Through revealing portraits of both historical and modern-day thinkers, academics and leaders in the fields of technology, science and culture, and their deep work habits, Newport shares an inspiring collection of tools to wring every last drop of value out of your intellectual capacity. He explains why mastering this shift in work practices is crucial for anyone who intends to stay ahead in a complex information economy and how to systematically train the mind to focus. Put simply: developing and cultivating a deep work practice is one of the best decisions we can make in an increasingly distracted world.

Money - investing, personal finance, and business decisions - is typically taught as a math-based field, where data and formulas tell us exactly what to do. But in the real world people don’t make financial decisions on a spreadsheet. They make them at the dinner table, or in a meeting room, where personal history, your own unique view of the world, ego, pride, marketing, and odd incentives are scrambled together. In The Psychology of Money, award-winning author Morgan Housel shares 19 short stories exploring the strange ways people think about money.

For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Cal Newport's clearly written manifesto flies in the face of conventional wisdom by suggesting that it should be a person's talent and skill - and not necessarily their passion - that determines their career path. Newport, who graduated from Dartmouth College (Phi Beta Kappa) and earned a PhD from MIT, contends that trying to find what drives us, instead of focusing on areas in which we naturally excel, is ultimately harmful and frustrating to job seekers.

The book draws its inspiration from stoicism, the ancient Greek philosophy of enduring pain or adversity with perseverance and resilience. Stoics focus on the things they can control, let go of everything else, and turn every new obstacle into an opportunity to get better, stronger, tougher. As Marcus Aurelius put it nearly 2000 years ago: “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.”

Intelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world, there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn. In our daily lives, too many of us favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt. We listen to opinions that make us feel good, instead of ideas that make us think hard. We see disagreement as a threat to our egos, rather than an opportunity to learn.

Not for me - or my generation?
The book is well told, the speaker does a great job and it contains some anecdotes.
While from the content side there is nothing in for me.
That you need to set aside some time for thinking and that you shall do this distraction free is not a new concept. It is taught and applied since decades or centuries.
This book is written with a background of twitter, Facebook and other social media. So it probably applies more to a millennial generation.
The core concept nevertheless could have been in a short article like on one or two pages - filling up a whole book is from my perspective a waste of time.
Other people, who are easily distracted by mails and social media might find this book more helpful - if you are not distracted too much during the 7-8hours the book takes.

loved 'so good they can't ignore you' but this one is really stripping down how to maintain a powerful work environment and ethic of deep work and questioning learned well established habits of shallow work in times of constant interconnectedness. shows own examples of applying and progress and mentions the deep work ethic of ultra high achievers like Bill Gates. what a gem. straight edge stuff instantly to adopt. keep u updated!

Highly relevant, very practical
Being in a constant state of distraction has become the new norm of being and of working.
While recent research on multi-tasking has clearly shown how ill-equipped our brains are at handling multiple complex (and even simple) tasks simultaneously, we are still continually being pushed to sacrifice focus and depth for instant accessibility and perceived flexibilty:
Open Office Spaces, expecting immediate responses to emails and the increasing taboo against defining clear times in which one does not wish to be interrupted. All of this has been shown to not only decrease productivity but also to decrease work place satisfaction and increase stress.
This book makes a clear case for why deeply focused, uninterrupted work is becoming more and more valuable in todays information economy, where there is a premium on highly complex work that is produced efficiently.
Since this focused approach is becoming increasingly rare and harder to implement, those who manage to adopt it stand to gain a tremendous competitive edge. Even more significantly, deep work binds in nicely with the concept of "flow", which has been shown to increase work- (and life-) satisfaction.
Cal Newport builds his arguments on success stories, practical examples and personal experience. He also provides a clear framework for how to implement the necessary changes to your work routine and environment.
I read and listen to plenty of books on the subject of productivity and self-development and Cal Newports books stand out very clearly above the rest. There is no unnecessary "fluff" and padding in his works, just clear arguments and practical advice. I also highly recommend his other book, "So good they can't ignore you".
