Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in "The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas". As her family lay dying, little Libby fled their tiny farmhouse into the freezing January snow. She lost some fingers and toes, but she survived, and famously testified that her 15-year-old brother, Ben, was the killer.
Twenty-five years later, Ben sits in prison, and troubled Libby lives off the dregs of a trust created by well-wishers who've long forgotten her.
The Kill Club is a macabre secret society obsessed with notorious crimes. When they locate Libby and pump her for details, proof they hope may free Ben, Libby hatches a plan to profit off her tragic history. For a fee, she'll reconnect with the players from that night and report her findings to the club...and maybe she'll admit her testimony wasn't so solid after all.
As Libby's search takes her from shabby Missouri strip clubs to abandoned Oklahoma tourist towns, the narrative flashes back to January 2, 1985. The events of that day are relayed through the eyes of Libby's doomed family members, including Ben, a loner whose rage over his shiftless father and their failing farm have driven him into a disturbing friendship with the new girl in town.
Piece by piece, the unimaginable truth emerges, and Libby finds herself right back where she started...on the run from a killer.

Excellent!
These actors and the director are the very best! I enjoyed the book and the performance very much. The story was sad and violent, but an engrossing who-done-it! The pain of living in rural poverty, the torment of being around or dependent on incompetent, mentally ill, malevolent and dangerous people is ever present on this story and it has the ring of truth. Gillian Flynn knows what she is talking about and knows how to tell a good story! I am looking forward to more from this writer!

Family drama!
One thing I absolutely admired when reading a Gillian Flynn novel is the diversity of characters. You can never say that she can only write on particular woman or man. Amy (Gone Girl) is completely different from Camille (Sharp Object) or Libby (Dark Places). Every woman has her own story, her own character, her own fears or psychological problems.
Although for me this time around I kind of had a feeling who was behind it, I can never get it completely right with Gillian’s plot twists which is a good thing because I get bored very easily with less than smart crime stories.
I really like the multiple prospectives because they really help you figuring out why those people do the things they do. Otherwise it would be too easy to make Libby the ever so poor victim, Ben the murderous brother and Patty the absolutely incompetent mother which is not true. All of those three have more to it than it shows at first. My favorite POV by far was Patty because she really thought she was doing all she can to get her kids through.
Gillian Flynn really got me hooked and I’m looking forward to the next book.

Extrem spannende Geschichte!
Sehr angenehm vorgetragen, gut verständlich, extrem spannende Geschichte!
Gone Girl habe ich vorher (auf Deutsch) gelesen, Dark Places hat mir noch besser gefallen.

Incredible book
"What a cold woman" you might think in the beginning. How Libby is financing herself by the tragedy that happened to her family seems dirty. But confronted with things she couldn't understand as a child and had pushed away from her memories the story unfolds to a level, that she wasn't prepared for.
A great story, This is my 3rd from from Gillian Flynn and I've enjoyed it as much as the first two.

So gripping
Another incredible narrative feat from Flynn. A truly gripping story of nuanced, full characters. I was hooked by the twists and turns, yet soothed by the voice actors cadence.

Scaredy-pants-approved
I like the length of the story and how uncomfortable it made me feel. It isn't scary, just kinda interesting. Loved the performances. The ending is a bit anti-climactic, but well-rounded. I hated, however, the descriptions of the female characters. Every single pair of breasts was described in the most detailed, disgusting way ever. Literally why. This was made all the worse by the fact that the main character - a woman - made most of these observations herself. Ew? I expected more from a female author. Good way to kill a few suspenseful hours none the less.

A great story perfectly read ...
... that is what this is in a nutshell. The characters are convincing, especially Libby is portrayed very well, and the performance is perfect. It was a pleasure to listen to this book.

Langweiliger als gedacht
Ich fand die Beschreibung der Geschichte sehr gut und hatte mich auf eine spannende Geschichte gefreut die mal anders ist als die üblichen Geschichten. Ich fand die Geschichte war aber letztendlich sehr in die Länge gezogen, nicht wirklich spannend und die Sprecher fand ich persönlich schlecht. Ich wollte zwischendurch immer wieder aufhören und musste mich quälen weiter zuhören. Habs letztendlich nur bis zum Ende gehört, weil ich wissen wollte, wer's gewesen ist.

Packend und atmosphärisch, klasse gelesen
Super Hörbuch, bei dem ich vollkommen eingetaucht bin in die Story und die Schicksale der Personen. Große Klasse wie sich der Spannungsbogen kontinuierlich aufbaut und man dem Finale und der Auflösung der Frage, was passiert ist und ob es ein Happy End gibt, entgegen fiebert.
