Inhaltsangabe

Dark Mirror is the ultimate inside account of the vast global surveillance network that now pervades all our lives.
Barton Gellman’s informant called himself ‘Verax’ - the truth-teller. It was only later that Verax unmasked himself as Edward Snowden. But Gellman’s primary role in bringing Snowden’s revelations to light, for which he shared the Pulitzer Prize, is only the beginning of this gripping real-life spy story. Snowden unlocked the door: here Gellman describes what he found on the other side over the course of a years-long journey of investigation. It is also the story of his own escalating battle against unknown digital adversaries after he discovered his own name on a file in the leaked document trove and realised that he himself was under attack.
Through a gripping narrative of paranoia, clandestine operations and jaw-dropping revelations, Dark Mirror delineates in full for the first time the hidden superstructure that connects government espionage with Silicon Valley. Who is spying on us and why? Here are the answers.
Kritikerstimmen
"A remarkable, authentic and chilling exposé of a global conspiracy that reads like a first-rate conspiracy thriller: a book of gripping, compulsive and disturbing impact." (William Boyd)

Best NON-fiction - robbing you of any romantics about spying and surveillance by giving you the details and insights to make up your own verdict. If the step by step revelation of snows leaks had not reached you, this is a dense version of the pandora vault. If you geek, you'll be tempted to rethink geekyness and all the sweet of lingering for the low hanging fruits & feeling need to become responsible and outgrow the next joke or challenge on reddit. To reflect on what ethics derive from e-gaming and main stream science fiction. We need not to become desensitized und get used to frequent surveillance use by government bodys in western democracies or anywhere. Such coverage as "usual and okay" to refer to surveillance tools for crime solving in Cinema and TV film should be revised as people might come to conclusion, these measures only matter to criminals. Mass or even minority surveillance is bad&evil at its core as it allows for self-updating social graphs of our communities resulting in means to brake our democracies. Therefore it should not be whitewashed or made attractive by arguing it to be the magic wand against paedophiles or terrorists.
Anyway have in mind, this is an author deeply rooted in the morals & values of the favourable version of the US that perished in 2017. And therefore at least the nightmares come, if you travel the lines he's drawing into the near foreseeable future. Remember this is a report and nothing fictional.
Also great wording and inspired reading by the author himself. The total lack of entertainment isn't his fault.
