The story isn't terrible by any means. But the constant lighthearted jokes and corny comments from the protagonist make this feel like a marvel movie in the worst way, despite the serious topics and interesting world building that come up during the story. The artificial stupidity of the protagonist resets any character development of the first book, paired with numerous inconsistencies in events remembered from the 1st book this just isn't to my taste. The 1st book had a solid balance between jovial and serious moments with a bit of horror sprinkled in. Here everyone is basically a action movie stereotype and it gets very grading very fast. It really is a shame, because many interesting things get set up in the first book but the resolutions are underwhelming at best. If you like light-hearted apocalypse novels, it's a solid buy, it just didn't live up to my expectations.
