Der Plot an sich ist ziemlich niedlich: Es handelt sich um einen Jungen, der als imaginären Freund eine sprechende Katze besitzt.

Die Geschichte sollte wohl einen Lerneffekt für Kinder haben. Dieser wurde auch in jedem Fall gelungen übermittelt. Fande die Geschichte allerdings für ein Kinderbuch ein wenig zu traurig.

Der Sprecher hat die Geschichte sehr angenehm erzählt.

Alles in Allem fand ich die Geschichte sehr niedlich, wenn aber ein ticken zu traurig für meinen Geschmack.

Katherine Applegate is an absolute legend in children’s literature. I absolutely adored her ‘Endling’ series and just like those books, Applegate masters the art of discussing very difficult topics in ways children understand.

In ‘Crenshaw’ we meet Jackson, a young boy who struggles to fit in because of his parents’ financial struggles. To help him cope with these issues, he has an imaginary friend Crenshaw. The big black cat helps him get through difficult times and gives him advice.

I just love how the author once again managed to communicate difficult topics through the lens of a child. In ‘Endling’ she talked about mass extinction and showed what happened from the perspective of the ones affected the worst by it, instead of telling us from the sideline as an allknowing bystander. With all the necessary humour and magic of course.

And just like in ‘Endling’ themes like (found) family and friendship are front and centre of the story.

I loved this fun little book and I am so looking forward to everything the author still has in store for us.
