The early chapters suggest a writer interested in introspection and complexity, while the later chapters rely on predictable arguments, familiar culture-war framing, and policy defenses that read more like campaign material than a serious memoir.
The result is a work that feels split between two different projects: one personal and one political. The personal material has some depth, but the political material weakens the book’s credibility and makes it feel less honest, less coherent, and less rewarding than it could have been.
