À propos de ce titre

Continuing the saga begun in I, Claudius, Robert Graves's Claudius the God is a compelling fictional autobiography of the Roman emperor.

Having outlived the conspiracies, betrayals, and bloodshed that decimated his family, Claudius has finally ascended to the imperial throne. Once dismissed as a stammering fool and harmless scholar, he now rules the mightiest empire in the known world. But the man who survived by hiding in plain sight must discover whether intelligence and good intentions are enough to govern a world built on ambition and fear.

As emperor, Claudius sets out to restore justice, reform the government , and secure Rome’s future. Yet the machinery of power has a will of its own. Treacherous senators, ambitious freedmen, military rivals, and a succession of increasingly dangerous personal entanglements threaten to undermine his reign. Beyond the capital, the conquest of Britain promises glory and expansion; within the palace, the struggle for influence becomes ever more perilous.

And at the heart of it all lies Claudius himself: a scholar who longs to be a good ruler, a husband and father caught in the currents of imperial politics, and a man whose greatest strengths may also prove his undoing.

Robert Graves (1895–1985) was a British poet, novelist, critic and classical scholar, renowned for his imaginative engagement with ancient history and mythology. Best known for I, Claudius and Claudius the God, he combined meticulous research with a distinctive literary voice, bringing the ancient world vividly to life.
