This really is one of Clarke's best efforts. Unbelievable it was written in the 1950s. This is utterly believable. Well read and hugely entertaining.

Every science fiction book is influenced by the time during which it is written, but here some concepts and habits are mentioned that completely destroy the illusion. The story itself is heavily focusing on the metaphysical. The style is OK, but not impressive.
