You can learn a lot from Fried’s book “Charlemagne”! So it’s worth reading it. One can criticise that he does not really mention that Charlemagne was the stepstone for the power of the clerics till today.

This is not a chronological biography, but an extensive & comprehensive description of charlemagnes world. It goes into all sorts of aspects to convey the full picture, but it often doesn’t focus much on what happens to Charlemagne himself. The narrator is not the best narrator and a far cry from some podcasters that deal with similar topics. At times he seems a bit unenthusiastic. Nevertheless, he does an adequate job - I wouldn’t stop listening because of the narrator, but neither is the narrator a compelling reason to start listening.
