I heard about 6 or 7 Scarpetta novels and they all fall rather short towards the ending, for some reason Cornwell doesn't produce the tension and thrill the otherwise well developed story deserves.
OK, the characters are really strangely developed: Kay is ultraintelligent but her sister is basically a self-absorbed moron, Lucy is rich beyond means and can provide anything to the story. Carry is a complete sociopath but has all the resources, contacts and logistics she needs.
And so on. This is just generally bad.
But this book is really bad. The whole storytelling is focused on a few aspects with tedious detail. Cornwell even explains how a hairbrush is handed to Scarpetta - the hairbrush has no relevance for the story at all. But later on you learn of relevant developments as if they were an afterthought.
And the ending... about the most anticlimactic ending ever.

I'm disappointed.
